  7.     Dick Cheney has earned high marks as the Bush
  8. administration's embodiment of square-jawed Western rectitude.
  9. But some in the U.S. military no longer see him that way. Though
  10. his forthright account of dozens of House-bank overdrafts while
  11. a Congressman satisfied most political observers, it did not
  12. wash with citizens of the more stringent military culture.
  13. Letters in service newspapers have pointed out that the armed
  14. forces would never have tolerated such behavior. Wrote an
  15. outraged correspondent in the Army Times: "There have been good
  16. troops put out of the services with a bad discharge for having
  17. committed lesser offenses than Cheney did."
