  4. The Christian Science church, $235 million poorer, drops an
  5. experiment

  8.     The First Church of Christ, Scientist, got out of the
  9. cable-television business after running up $235 million in
  10. losses over seven years. Shutdown costs -- including severance
  11. packages for the 400 employees of Monitor Television who were
  12. laid off -- will run another $45 million. While church officials
  13. search for a buyer for the cable operation, the Monitor Channel
  14. will broadcast reruns. The channel managed to attract about 4
  15. million subscribers before its demise, a bantamweight entry in
  16. the cable ring compared with the likes of the Discovery Channel,
  17. which has upwards of 57 million homes.

  19.     The television fiasco has triggered deep schisms within
  20. the Christian Science Church over the use and accountability of
  21. church funds. Thus far, officials have borrowed $41.5 million
  22. from the institution's pension fund to cover operating losses.
  23. The three top officials of Monitor Television, including
  24. chairman and chief executive officer John Hoagland Jr., have
  25. resigned. Some influential church members are pressing Christian
  26. Science leaders for a full accounting of church spending on the
  27. television project. The move to television was controversial
  28. within the church from the first. Many officials were critical
  29. because it drained funds from the highly respected church
  30. newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor.
