  4. High-tech lighting may be as bad as sunlight for causing skin
  5. cancer

  8.     As the ozone layer thins, people may spend more time indoors
  9. to avoid the skin cancers and cataracts likely to result from
  10. more ultraviolet light reaching the earth's surface. That
  11. strategy could backfire. Like the sun, the high-intensity quartz-
  12. halogen lights used increasingly in homes and offices emit
  13. ultraviolet as well as visible light, and there is now evidence
  14. that they, too, can cause skin cancer.

  16.     Two scientists at the University of Genoa, Italy, noted
  17. that the rays coming from unshielded quartz-halogen lamps can
  18. induce mutations in the DNA of bacteria. Since genetic mutations
  19. are one cause of cancer, they decided to move up a few rungs on
  20. the evolutionary ladder. They subjected specially bred hairless
  21. mice to the lights 12 hours a day for a year and found that
  22. every one developed skin tumors -- most benign, but some
  23. cancerous. The research, reported in the British journal Nature,
  24. involved only a handful of mice, so it was labeled a pilot
  25. study. But the results were so striking that the authors
  26. recommended installing UV filters on halogen lamps already in
  27. use and requiring that all new ones come equipped with such
  28. filters (some already are).
