PEOPLE, Page 83N'Dour Endures
By MICHAEL QUINN
Back home, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, a leader in
"world music," drives a luxury car and cannot walk the streets
without drawing a crowd. But in New York City he moves unnoticed
and stays at modest hotels. Now filmmaker Spike Lee's new
record label is releasing an N'Dour album, Eyes Open, that may
finally introduce U.S. listeners to the versatile voice and
richly textured rhythms familiar from France to Japan. "It will
be a challenge to see if we can get African Americans to buy his
music," says Lee. "It's kind of sad -- white college kids were
hip to reggae and Bob Marley way before the black masses."
