DIED. George Murphy, 89, Hollywood song-and-dance man turned
U.S. Senator; in Palm Beach, Fla. Murphy made 55 movies,
including This is the Army in 1943 with Ronald Reagan, his
longtime friend. He also appeared with such stars as Gene Kelly
and Shirley Temple. Murphy served two terms as president of the
Screen Actors Guild and in 1950 received an honorary Academy
Award for career achievement. A Republican, Murphy retired from
the screen in 1952 and was elected to the Senate from California
in 1964 in his first bid for political office. He lost a
re-election bid in 1970 and became a political consultant.
