  4.     DIED. Mollie Parnis, ninetyish, fashion designer whose
  5. versatile dresses were worn by First Ladies from Mamie
  6. Eisenhower to Betty Ford; in New York City. Starting as an
  7. assistant saleswoman in the showroom of a blouse manufacturer,
  8. Parnis went on to build a multimillion-dollar fashion business
  9. with her husband Leon Livingston. A green-and-blue silk taffeta
  10. Parnis dress worn by Mamie Eisenhower at a reception in 1955
  11. made headlines when a guest appeared wearing the same dress.
  12. Parnis, untroubled, explained,"I do not sell directly to any
  13. wearer. Nor do I usually make one of a kind; that's what makes
  14. this country a great democracy."
