  4.     DIED. Wang Hongwen, 57, youngest member of China's Gang of
  5. Four during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution; of a liver ailment;
  6. in Beijing. He and the three other Gang members were responsible
  7. for purging tens of thousands of party members and
  8. intellectuals and launching ultra-leftist ideological and
  9. political campaigns. In 1981 he was sentenced to life in prison
  10. for wrongful persecution and plotting to overthrow the
  11. government.
