  4. Reagan gets the word that he is not a target in the Iran-contra
  5. probe

  8.     The signals have suggested otherwise. Former Secretary of
  9. Defense Caspar Weinberger, who will stand trial early next year
  10. on perjury charges, strongly implied that special prosecutor
  11. Lawrence Walsh had offered to reduce charges against him if he
  12. would help finger Ronald Reagan. Clair George, formerly the CIA
  13. deputy director for operations, who is now on trial for perjury,
  14. received a similar offer to name names right to the top. Oliver
  15. North, once Reagan's most adoring acolyte, proclaimed his own
  16. unclouded version of the former President's involvement in the
  17. Iran-contra scandal in his memoirs: "President Reagan knew
  18. everything."

  20.     And yet the special prosecutor ended his pursuit last week
  21. -- at least for the moment. Responding to reports that he was
  22. about to indict Reagan, Walsh sent a letter to the former
  23. President reassuring him that he was neither a subject nor a
  24. target of the investigation. These legal terms mean that while
  25. Reagan may have information of interest to the investigation,
  26. he is not likely to be indicted. Former White House chief of
  27. staff Donald Regan received a similar letter, but Walsh was
  28. reportedly turning his sights on former Attorney General Edwin
  29. Meese, who, according to some accounts, masterminded the
  30. cover-up.
