  4. Brazil's President is pressed hard to quit before he is impeached

  7.     The parallels between August 1992 in Brasilia and August 1974
  8. in Washington were eerily exact. Like Richard Nixon 18 years
  9. earlier, President Fernando Collor de Mello vowed to fight to
  10. the end against impeachment and removal from office. But Collor
  11. too saw many of his strongest supporters -- including even the
  12. politician who served as best man at his 1984 wedding -- turn
  13. against him. Many advised him to resign before he is thrown out
  14. and thus spare the nation a prolonged governmental paralysis.
  15. Collor's hopes of hanging on nearly disappeared last week when a
  16. congressional commission concluded after a three-month
  17. investigation that he and members of his family had received
  18. $6.5 million from his former campaign fund raiser, who extorted
  19. large sums from businessmen hoping for government contracts or
  20. favors. Lawmakers will vote on whether to accuse Collor formally
  21. and start a trial in the Senate sometime this month -- if the
  22. President can survive in office even that long.
