THE WEEK, Page 24SOCIETYET CETERA
TOO TOUGH ON ABORTION
Louisiana's stringent law prohibiting most abortions would send
doctors who perform them illegally to jail for up to 10 years.
Last week the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans
struck down the law. Louisiana's attorney general, Richard
Ieyoub, conceded that Louisiana "will have some difficulty" in
defending its law if the state decides to appeal it to the U.S.
Supreme Court. In a Pennsylvania case in June, the Supreme Court
ruled out any restrictions that placed an "undue burden" on a
woman seeking an abortion.
