MILESTONES, Page 26
DIED. Joseph Block, 90, folksy, independent steel executive;
in Chicago. The former chairman of the Inland Steel company,
Block was a grandson of its founder and the son of its former
president. Starting as a mill hand in 1922, he held nearly
every position in the company before becoming chairman in 1959.
His civic conscience and common touch ran deep; he threw the
weight of his company behind securing a fair-employment law in
Illinois and redeveloping East Chicago. In 1962 he caused
controversy by breaking step with the steel industry and
refusing to raise steel prices.
