  4. The U.S.'s largest cable operator is switching to compressed-
  5. digital TV

  8.     The cable companies that fill our homes with more TV
  9. channels than we know what to do with have been threatening for
  10. years to adopt technology that could compound the problem
  11. tenfold. Now one of them is poised to actually do it. Tele-
  12. Communications Inc., which provides cable TV to 9 million U.S.
  13. households, announced plans to install equipment that could, in
  14. theory, deliver more than 500 channels by early 1994. TCI's
  15. announcement represents the first major consumer application of
  16. compressed-digital TV, which can squeeze 10 channels in the
  17. space currently occupied by only one. Not to be outdone,
  18. officials at rival Time Warner point out that by applying the
  19. same technology to the fiber-optic lines in its Quantum system,
  20. the 150 channels it delivers to customers in Queens, New York,
  21. could multiply to 1,500.
