1-1. Purpose and Structure of Handbook.
a. The purpose of the handbook is to provide a ready
reference for the use and operation of the Compu-Chef Cookbook &
Nutrition Guide software.
b. General Information:
COMPU-CHEF is an electronic cookbook and nutrition guide. On the
cookbook side, Compu-Chef contains over 100 traditional American
family recipes accumulated by four Iowa farm family generations
and presented here for your use and enjoyment.
COMPU-CHEF is also a sophisticated use of the computer for the
storage, retrieval and computation of various dietary information
valuable for these (and any other) recipes.
Compu-Chef costs $29.95, an extraordinary price for such a
diverse, useful, and fun product.
Important Note: This is a Shareware product and as such it has
enjoyed a lot of popularity. Shareware requires that we provide
to you our very best for the benefit of national advertising and
the opportunity of demonstrating the worth of this product in the
commercial marketplace. We are happy with the results achieved
using Shareware as our distribution medium. We are very unhappy
with the total lack of commercial success. If you don't buy
the copy that you use we don't make any money. If we don't make
money we have absolutely no interest in continuing with Compu-
Chef beyond this version (1991.3). If you're counting on someone
else to "pay the piper" ... it's not going to happen. Most
people believe that copyable software is free for the taking ...
like recording movies from HBO. We aren't HBO, or Warner Bros.,
or Michael Jackson trying to eke out an extra few million by
evoking the copyright laws. We are working stiffs JUST LIKE
YOU. We are distributing a lot of copies of Compu-Chef, but
only 4 (yes, that's f-o-u-r) honest people have paid for the
product. That tells DB Software two things ... the product
is not worth what we are asking or dishonest people have
decided to use it without paying. Either way it's a pretty
bad business venture so far. You can change that by
registering Compu-Chef. We would really appreciate it.

1-2. FEATURES:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Over 100 excellent recipes are included.
Capacity to create and store an additional 2,200+ recipes of
your own creation or preference.
26 categories available for easy recipe storage, retrieval, and
archiving.
Directories for all categories are displayed by the full title
you give to the recipe.
View, add, update, delete, and search recipe functions from one
menu.
Recipes are always displayed (and printed) in a standard visual
format for recipes. No more wearing your fingers out copying
your best recipes for friends and relatives ... print the
recipe as many times as you desire using your dot-matrix
printer.
Complete nutrition information available at the touch of a button
for Calories, Protein, Fat, Carbohydrates, Calcium, and Sodium
(salt) for all recipes ... including the ones that you add.
(Over 6000 elements in the nutrition data base).
With Compu-Chef you will be able to compute the nutritional value
of home recipes for the entire recipe and for each individual
serving.
File notes and other supplemental information with your recipes
that will "pop-up" at the push of a button while viewing the
recipe.
A Shopping List pop-up note pad is available while viewing the
recipes. The shopping List appears in the right half of the
screen so that you may VIEW the ingredients of a recipe at
the same time. Type in those items that you need, file the
Shopping List, and then call up another recipe. If you need
items for the new recipe, simply call for the Shopping List
and continue entering items. (See NOTE #1, Page #3).
Page # 2
A note pad (not in the Shopping List format) is also available
for the purpose of writing, storing, retrieving, and printing
notes that you make to yourself. This feature is provided as
a self-contained planning guide but may be used for any
purpose.
Swap recipes (that contain full nutrition information) with
other Compu-Chef users by copying the recipes to diskette or
by uploading / downloading to an electronic bulletin board.
Instantly convert any recipe stored in Compu-Chef to increase
or decrease the number of persons served by the recipe. This
is great when you want to serve two people with a 6-serving
recipe ... or you need to convert Grandma's best casserole to
serve the whole gang.
Get an instant common measures table at the push of a button.
Calculate your projected calorie intake based on how much you
want to weigh, your sex, and your age.
Accumulate 60 days worth of statistics on weight-loss / gain for
the entire family. Project a chart that graphically
represents your progress toward achieving your weight goals.
Search all Compu-Chef recipes using relational operators (search
keys) for combinations of relationships between calories,
protein, carbohydrates, fats, calcium, and sodium. Full View
function available for all recipes found.
Search all Compu-Chef recipes for up to five ingredients. Full
View function for all recipes qualified.
Most importantly ... Compu-Chef is EASY TO USE and generally
accepts the information for recipes the way that you would
normally write them down in your recipe notebook.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Compu-Chef is a very large application because of the complexity
of its programming and due to the large number of recipes
included.
DB Software, Inc. will not honor requests for refunds on
registrations made after July 1st, 1990 due to disk size
limitations on your personal computer. We advise anyone making
a purchase after notification of system specifications to hold
your current copy until you upgrade your system. Remember,
most worthwhile programs / applications need much more than
360k to operate.
Page # 3
1-3. Using the Keyboard.
a. When adding recipe ingredients in Screen #2 of the ADD
or UPDATE function, remember to place a comma (,) between the
quantity and measure, and between the measure and the ingredient.
Example:
You would normally say ...
1 medium onion, finely diced
Compu-Chef needs for you to say ...
1, medium, onion, finely diced
The requirement for commas is the only divergence by
Compu-Chef from the way people normally write recipes and the
reason is that the computer needs to absolutely identify the
quantity, the measure, and the ingredient so that computations
can be made quickly for the nutritive values.
b. Always press ESC (the Escape key) when you are finished
with Screens #2, #3, #4, and #5 in the ADD or UPDATE mode. You
will press ESC twice on Screen #5 to exit the program and save
your new recipe (or updated recipe).
c. You may print your recipes in the VIEW mode by pressing
ALT-P. This will print the recipe as one file to the character
printer.
d. You may also print the recipes one screen at a time
by pressing CTRL-P in the VIEW mode. CTRL-P will also print any
information screen seen in the VIEW mode including Nutrition
Summary, Help, Measures, Calorie Computer, Number of Servings
Recomputations, etc.
e. Help for the full-page edit functions of ADD and
UPDATE for screens #2, #3, #4, and #5 is available by pressing
ALT-H.
f. Help for the functions of VIEW is available by
pressing the letter "H" when viewing a recipe.
Page # 4
1-4. System Information.
a. Hardware Requirements: Compu-Chef has been beta site
tested to run on IBM-PC and PS/2 or compatibles.
(1) A hard disk with at least 720k free space is needed
to run Compu-Chef in its entirety.
(2) An installation procedure (shown in the README.1ST
file) is recommended to all users regardless of how many, or
what type, of disk drive(s) are part of your personal computing
system.

1-5. Disclaimer.
a. DB Software, Inc. is not responsible for the
accuracy of the nutritional computations shown for recipes as a
result of Compu-Chef's data base or computations. The nutrition
data is a non-medical guide. All nutrition information is
approximate at best. Our data was taken from public publications
authored by the Department of Agriculture and we have made an
honest effort to be accurate. However, there is no such thing as
a perfect program or perfect data base and we are not claiming
perfection for Compu-Chef. You must be aware that this guide is
not a medical or dietary certification of the nutritional value
of a recipe or ingredient used in a recipe. A doctor or
dietician should always be consulted for reliable information
concerning diet (especially if you have dietary limitations
because of an over-weight condition, concerns about sodium intake,
cholesterol intake, if you are diabetic, or if you have any other
special dietary needs or concerns.) This product, and the use of
this product, is NOT endorsed, sponsored, or recommended by a
doctor, dietician, medical group or medical organization.
To paraphrase the above statement; feel comfortable about using
Compu-Chef as a guide while you are looking for good recipes to
prepare for your family, but if you must have CERTIFIED nutrition
information ... get it from a doctor or licensed dietician.

1-6. Warranty.
a. This product is warranteed for defects in the diskette
shipped to you for 10 days after our shipment date. If the
diskette cannot be read into your system, return it using a
diskette mailer to:
Compu-Chef
DB Software, Inc.

Indianapolis, Indiana 46219
Upon receipt of the diskette, we will make a new copy
using your registration number and re-ship the new diskette to
you.
NOTE: This offer is extended only to registered users, both
commercial and ShareWare. Purchase of a diskette
containing the ShareWare version of Compu-Chef is NOT a
registration and DB Software, Inc. does not warrant media
unless produced by us. ShareWare users receiving media
from ShareWare distributers should follow the directions
given for returning defective merchandise to that
distributer. The same applies to copies obtained from
electronic bulletin boards.
b. If the diskette is inadvertantly damaged after you
receive it; enclose the damaged diskette, a new registration
form, and a $3.50 replacement fee (check or money order) in a

if you have backed up the original diskette you will not need to
replace the original if damaged later.
c. There is no warranty (expressed or implied) for the
usefulness of Compu-Chef for any particular purpose. If we find
that a refund of part, or all, of the purchase price of $29.95 is
warranted, we will void your registration and license to use
Compu-Chef. Please enclose your phone number so that user
assistance may be made available to you to help resolve any
problems that you may experience. You may also call and leave a
message. The phone number is (317) 356-6066 for technical
assistance. We gaurantee technical support to registered users
only, however; we will do our best to answer your questions if
your are interested in the product and have not yet registered.
d. If Compu-Chef was purchased "off the shelf", please
complete the registration form and include your registration
number. Purchasing the product does not automatically register
its use and we want you to have all of the advantages due to a
paying customer.

2-1. VIEWING RECIPES
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for using the
many functions available in the VIEW mode of Compu-Chef.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU V
NOTE: If you use the command "V" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 1 when the Main Menu is received. (You may
also use the up and down arrow keys or the approriate command
line letters for selections from the Main Menu.) The ESC and
CTRL-Q functions will return you to the SYSTEM from the Main
Menu. ALT-Q will refresh the Main Menu screen.
5. You will now receive the Categories Available Screen. Enter
a letter code that corresponds with the category for the
recipe to be viewed. (You may also use the arrow keys to
'point' to your category selections.) The ESC key will
return you to the Main Menu. ALT-Q also returns you to the
Main Menu from the Categories Available Screen. CTRL-Q will
return you to the SYSTEM.
6. You will receive the QUALIFYING RECIPE FILES Screen for that
category. This directory is alphabetic (based on the title
of the recipe) and is accessed by using the up/down arrow
keys, page up/down, home, and end keys. There are five (5)
total screens available each containing a maximum of 20
alphabetically listed recipe titles for a total of 100
recipes for 26 categories (2,600 possible). ESC returns you
to the Categores Available Screen. ALT-Q returns you to the
Main Menu. CTRL-Q returns you to the SYSTEM.
7. You will now receive the 1st of 3 pages of Recipe screens.
Page # 8
8. FUNCTIONS Available from the RECIPE Screens (1-3) are:
C ... The Calorie Computer
F ... Terminal Configuration Utility
H ... This HELP Screen
M ... Cooking Weights and Measures
N ... Nutrition Data for the Recipe Being Viewed
S ... Supplemental RECIPE Information
W ... Table of Weights for Men and Women
Note: The functions shown immediately above "toggle" with
the keystroke shown. The Calorie Computer and
Number Served Conversion Utility ask questions
before allowing you to return to the VIEW function.
X ... Number Served Conversion Utility
Note: See para 17 of this section of the manual for this
utility.
D ... Daily Planning Note Pad
L ... Produce, Update and Print a RECIPE Shopping List
^P ... @P - Screen Dump to Printer OR Print Recipe as a
Report
Note: These functions have their own logic for returning to
the VIEW function. The PRINTs return when the print
is complete. The note pads allow you to file, erase,
and print. Return to VIEW is accomplished by
pressing the Escape key (you will be prompted to save
when exiting either the Shopping List or Planning
Guide notepads).
9. The RECIPES themselves are the focus of COMPU-Chef. The
recipes shown on pages 1 through 3 are in the format Title, Oven
Temperature (hi-lighted), Number Served, and the List of
Ingredients. Then you receive complete cooking / preparation
instructions. Three pages are allowed for this information basic
to a recipe, but usually only two pages are needed (even for long
recipes). Pg Up and Pg Dn give you complete access to all of the
screens needed to VIEW the recipe.
NOTE: The recipe screen may be "dumped" to your printer by
pressing the Ctrl-P keys, as may most of the screens and pop-ups
available to the VIEW function.
Page # 9
10. The Calorie Computer is accessed by pressing the letter "C"
while in the VIEW mode. The Calorie Computer requests
information and returns you to the VIEW mode when you have
entered your desired weight, age, sex, and have received a
projected daily calorie estimate. Press the letter "C" again when
you have received your calorie estimate (toggle) to return the
VIEW function. NOTE: You may want to view the Weight Chart for
Men and Women available during the RECIPE VIEW function and the
Daily Weight Charts main menu function. See para 18 of this
section of the manual.
11. The configuration utility allows you to permanently specify:
a. The drive and pathname in which to store the Compu-Chef
recipes and disk-based manual.
(1) The sub-directory must be followed by the character
"\". If you elect to change the sub-directory in
the configuration file, be sure to move all recipe
files and the manual to the new drive and sub-directory.
Use the INSTALL program provided to initially load
Compu-Chef with the "MOVE" parameter, i.e.,
C: <Enter>
CD\COMPCHEF <Enter>
INSTALL MOVE <Enter>
(2) The line in the configuration file controlling the
drive designator and pathname is so marked.
b. Colors may be configured for Compu-Chef if you have a
color monitor. Any changes in lines #2 through #5 for
those of you using monochrome monitors in meaningless.
Lines are designated with the functions they control.
Alter foreground, background, and blink attributes using
the table provided as text in the lower portion of the
configuration file.
(1) Compu-Chef comes configured to a background of
blue with white letters. If your color monitor
does not automatically display these colors, you
may want to alter the foreground and background
attributes until a pleasing combination is found.
DO NOT specify the foreground and background
attributes as the same number as the text will
become "invisible".
(2) Your new color scheme will not be recognized until
you press "Esc" to save the configuration file and
exit the editor.
Page # 10
c. Access the configuration utility by pressing the letter
"F" while in the VIEW mode of Compu-Chef. Answer all
the questions every time you access this utility. If
configuration is called by mistake, and you are happy
with your current terminal and pathname configuration,
then simply press the Escape (Esc) key.
d. If you really get the configuration out-of-whack while
playing with it, we recommend that you re-INSTALL
Compu-Chef from the production diskette sent to you
(and hopefully backed-up). Re-INSTALLation does not
overwrite new recipes that you've added. It will
overwrite updated recipes if you respond "Y" to the
overwrite question when LHarc ((c) Yoshizaki) is
unarchiving the original recipes.
12. Nutrition data for every Compu-Chef recipe for calories,
carbohydrates, calcium, fats, sodium, and protein is available
instantly in the VIEW mode by pressing the letter "N". If you
see the "CALORIE ALERT" flasher at the bottom of a recipe screen,
you will find that the recipe contains more than 500 calories for
each individual serving. All nutrition data is computed for the
total recipe and for each individual serving of the recipe.
Nutrition data is stored in the recipe data base for all recipes
added (or updated) using the Compu-Chef Recipe File Format.
Press the letter "N" again and you will return to the recipe VIEW
mode (toggle).
13. Recipe and function print capability is achieved in two
ways. We recommend that you print your recipes using Alt-P as
this will print the recipe on a single page in a standard recipe
format. You may use Ctrl-P to print the single recipe pages if
no function or help screens are in VIEW. Ctrl-P prints whatever
is on the screen but is only active in the VIEW mode and during
the EDIT Help and Measures Definition Help functions of the Add
/ Update modes.
Page # 11
14. The Supplemental and Notational "Pop-Up" screen is available
by pressing the letter "S". When used, these screens contain
useful information that is related to the recipe, but not a
legitimate part of a recipe that you might want to print. Return
to the VIEW mode by again pressing the letter "S". The Add /
Update modes allow for you to enter data for this facility as a
normal part of entering a new recipe (or updating an old recipe).
15. The Help Screen (illustrated in para. 8 in part) is
available by pressing the letter "H". Press the letter "H" again
and you will return to the VIEW mode.
16. A handy cooking weights and measures table is seen by
pressing the letter "M". When you are finished viewing this
table, press the letter "M" again to toggle back to the VIEW
mode.
17. The recipe quantity conversion facility is accessed by
pressing the letter "X". You will be asked for a new NUMBER
SERVED. Input the number and receive a recomputation of
quantities for each ingredient. This function does not toggle.
Press the ESCAPE (Esc) key to exit the function and you will
receive the Compu-Chef Main Menu. NOTE: Recipe amounts are
stated in 1/8 (or greater) measures. If you take a recipe that
serves 6, convert it to serve 20, and then convert it again to
serve 2 - you would not want to trust the quantities for the
ingredients after the first conversion. We have elected to start
you over so that the original recipe base line (established by
Grandma) will be used for all conversion computations.
18. The Table of Recommended Weights for Men and Women can be
obtained by pressing the letter "W". Return to the VIEW function
by pressing the letter "W" again. This table is also available
during the main menu # 5 (Daily Weight Charts).
19. You will receive a pop-up Shopping List if you press the
letter "L" while viewing a recipe. You may add to this the
Shopping List and use the Ctrl-F function to "file" it. Ctrl-P
will print the Shopping List. To start over entering new items
for the list, press Ctrl-E (erase). Ctrl-Y deletes the item at
the cursor position and moves all items after the item deleted
down. Alt - + causes a blank to be inserted at the cursor
position and all items after the insert will move up.
20. A notepad for daily planning needs is available by pressing
the letter "D" in the Recipe VIEW function. Make any notes that
you desire, add to the notes already entered, erase the notepad
and start over, save the notes, or print the notes. This feature
is quite useful for making notes that are applicable to meal
planning ... or for just jotting down ideas.
Page # 12
2-2. ADDING RECIPES
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for creating
your own recipe using the facilities of the Compu-Chef system.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU A
NOTE: If you use the command "A" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 2 when the Main Menu is received. (You may
also use the up and down arrow keys or the approriate command
line letters for selections from the Main Menu.) The ESC and
CTRL-Q functions will return you to the SYSTEM from the Main
Menu. ALT-Q will refresh the Main Menu screen.
6. The system will automatically assign the file name to the
new file. All you will ever have to know is the title that
you give the recipe on Screen # 1 of the ADD function (See
below). The recipe titles are always listed in alphabetic
order for your convenience in selection.
7. You will now receive the 1st of 5 RECIPE Add/Update screens.
a. Screen # 1 allows you to put in administrative data
including:
(1) The title of your RECIPE,
(2) A sub-title (or comments, classification, etc.),
(3) The oven temperature (or spaces if not applicable),
and
(4) The number of persons served by the recipe.
Page # 13
b. At the end of Screen # 1 you are asked if you wish to
make changes. If you have made input errors, answer "Y"
and re-type those items needing correction.
c. If you answer "N" to changes, you will receive Screen # 2.
8. Screen # 2 (List of Ingredients) is the heart of Compu-Chef.
a. Screen # 2 has a help facility available by typing ALT-H.
Refer to this help screen frequently until you are
familiar with the edit options and cursor control
features used to input, edit, and accept the recipe data
in the form needed for the application to compute and
store the nutrition information. b. The following is how
a list of ingredients might appear from your own recipe:
3 slices bacon
1 1/2 cups packaged herb-seasoned stuffing mix
6 thin veal steaks, pounded 1/8 inch thick
1 tabelspoon salad oil
2 10-ounce packages frozen broccoli spears, thawed
1 chicken bouillon cube
1/2 cup boiling water
1 10 1/2-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/3 cup milk
1 4 1/2- or 5-ounce can shrimp, drained
Now, here is how Compu-Chef wants to see the same list of
ingredients:
3, oz, bacon, (or 3 slices)
1 1/2, cups, stuffing mix, packaged, herb-seasoned
18, oz, veal, (6 thin steaks - pounded 1/8 inch thick)
1, T., salad oil
20, oz, brocolli, (in 2 10-ounce packages, thawed)
1, oz, bouillon, (1 cube of chicken bouillon)
1/2, cup, water, boiling
10.5, oz, cream of mushroom soup, (10 1/2-ounce can,
condensed)
1/3, cup, milk
5, oz, shrimp, drained (may also use a 4 1/2-ounce can)
Page # 14
c. As you can see, Compu-Chef uses the nonmenclature method
of assigning standard values to recipe ingredients so
that
(1) the quantity can be identified as the first
characters appearing before the 1st comma,
(2) the measure can be identified without having to store
10 gazillion different non-standard measures. Also,
measures must be given to a computer - an entry like
6 thin veal steaks means nothing to Compu-Chef
because there is no way to tell how much the steaks
weigh and therefore, the program cannot compute the
nutritional value. The measure is always identified
as between the 1st and 2nd commas.
(3) the ingredient will be looked up from the data base.
The ingredient must appear as the only entry on the
line after the second comma, or as the characters
located between the 2nd and 3rd commas.
1/2, cup, butter
... and ...
1/2, cup, butter, softened at room temperature
are both acceptable, whereas ...
1/2, cup, butter softened at room temperature
will identify the ingredient as ...
"BUTTER SOFTENED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE"
which is not good as "BUTTER" is readily identified
and "BUTTER SOFTENED AT ROOM TEMPERATURE" will
cause the program to ask you for more data
(Replace, Substitute, or Process Without Data).
9. When you are finished entering the List of Ingredients on
Screen # 2, press the "Escape" (Esc) key to start the edit of
Screen # 2.
Page # 15
10. If Compu-Chef does not understand a quantity or a measure, a
highlighted comment will appear immediately below the line being
questioned. You must change this line to a form acceptable to
the program. Check your comma placement. Check the quantity.
Check the measure. When you have corrected the entry, press the
Escape key again for a re-edit.
11. Compu-Chef will now look up all of the ingredients and
compute the nutritional values for the recipe and for the
individual servings of the recipe. Compu-Chef will display an
information screen for all items successfully computed. Press
any key to continue the edit of ingredients.
12. Compu-Chef will display the "NOT FOUND IN THE DATA BASE"
screen for any ingredient that it cannot identify exactly. You
have three choices at this point:
a. Select "R" (replace) and the program will ask for a
replacement ingredient. Enter the ingredient and
press <Enter>.
(1) If identified, you will receive information
about the next ingredient in your list. (2) If
the replacement value is not identified,
Compu-Chef will ask you to again choose "R",
"S", or "P".
b. Select "S (substitute) and the program will ask for
any group of characters. Enter the group of
characters and press <Enter>.
(1) If the characters you typed in match any part
of an ingredient listed in the data base, that
ingredient along with its record number will be
displayed.
(2) If the substitution value is not identified,
Compu-Chef will ask you to again choose "R",
"S", or "P".
Page # 16
(3) If one or more ingredients are found to match
the characters that you asked the program to
look for, you will then be asked to enter the
record number, "T" for try again (when you
don't want to choose any of the ingredients
displayed and wish to make another search
attempt), or "N" if you think that Compu-Chef
does not contain an ingredient close enough to
the one in your recipe.
(4) In almost all cases, you will identify an
ingredient that is the same (with a different
name), or so close that any differences for
nutritional value will be insignificant.
13. When the last ingredient has been successfully edited, and
computed, by Compu-Chef, you will receive Screen # 3 (Preparation
Instructions).
14. You may enter your preparation instructions in any form that
you see fit. Compu-Chef makes no decisions or computations based
on the data entered in Screen # 3. Do not exceed 22 lines of
preparation instructions.
15. When you are finished with Screen # 3, press the Escape key
and you will receive Screen # 4 (Preparation Instructions - 2).
If you have completed all instructions needed for your recipe,
simply accept this screen as blank by pressing the Escape key.
If the recipe is very long, and you need the additional space to
add more preparation instructions, type the continuation of those
instructions here.
When you have entered all instructions, press the Escape key
to receive Screen # 5 (Supplemental Instructions for the 'POP-UP'
Screen).
16. Supplemental instructions entered here will 'pop-up' in the
Compu-Chef RECIPE View Function when the letter "S" is pressed.
If you recipe does not need supplemental instructions, simply
press the Escape key to accept this screen.
17. Press the Escape key again at Screen # 5 to exit the
ADD/UPDATE program and return to the Compu-Chef Main Menu.
18. Upon receiving the Main Menu you may choose to:
VIEW, ADD, UPDATE, DELETE, UPDATE and VIEW WEIGHT CHARTS,
or PRINT this Manual. Pressing Escape will cause
the program to terminate if chosen at the Main Menu.

2-3. UPDATING RECIPES
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for changing
recipes. These instructions can be used for the recipes that came
with Compu-Chef, or for recipes that you have added or aquired
from friends that also use Compu-Chef.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU U
NOTE: If you use the command "U" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 3 when the Main Menu is received. (You may
also use the up and down arrow keys or the approriate command
line letters for selections from the Main Menu.) The ESC and
CTRL-Q functions will return you to the SYSTEM from the Main
Menu. ALT-Q will refresh the Main Menu screen.
5. You will now receive the Categories Available Screen. Enter
a letter code that corresponds with the category for the
recipe to be updated. (You may also use the arrow keys to
'point' to your category selections.) The ESC key will
return you to the Main Menu. ALT-Q also returns you to the
Main Menu from the Categories Available Screen. CTRL-Q will
return you to the SYSTEM.
7. You will now receive the 1st of 5 RECIPE Add/Update screens.
a. Screen # 1 allows you to put in administrative data
including:
(1) The title of your RECIPE,
(2) A sub-title (or comments, classification, etc.),
Page # 18
(3) The oven temperature (or spaces if not applicable),
and
(4) The number of persons served by the recipe.
5, oz, shrimp, drained (may also use a 4 1/2-ounce can)
Page # 19
9. When you are finished entering the List of Ingredients on
Screen # 2, press the "Escape" (Esc) key to start the edit of
Screen # 2.
Page # 20
Page # 21

2-4. DELETING RECIPES
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for deleting
a recipe using the facilities of the Compu-Chef system.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU D
NOTE: If you use the command "D" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 4 when the Main Menu is received. (You may
also use the up and down arrow keys or the approriate command
line letters for selections from the Main Menu.) The ESC and
CTRL-Q functions will return you to the SYSTEM from the Main
Menu. ALT-Q will refresh the Main Menu screen.
5. You will now receive the Categories Available Screen. Enter
a letter code that corresponds with the category for the
recipe to be deleted. (You may also use the arrow keys to
'point' to your category selections.) The ESC key will
return you to the Main Menu. ALT-Q also returns you to the
Main Menu from the Categories Available Screen. CTRL-Q will
return you to the SYSTEM.
6. You will receive the RECIPE Files Available Screen for that
category. This directory is alphabetic (based on the file)
name, shows a file reference number, and the full title
contained within the recipe file formatted recipe. Use page
up and page down to access any of the multiple directory
screens. Enter the file reference number when you have
identified the recipe that you wish to VIEW. ESC returns you
to the Categores Available Screen. ALT-Q returns you to the
Main Menu. CTRL-Q returns you to the SYSTEM.
7. You will receive a screen confirming the file that is to be
deleted. You may answer Y (yes) or N (no) to the deletion of
this file. If Y (yes) is chosen, the file will be
permanently erased from your hard-disk. (You may restore the
file if it is backed-up).
8. You will be returned to the Main Menu automatically.
Page # 23
2-5. DAILY WEIGHT CHARTS
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for using the
Daily Weight Chart(s) function of Compu-Chef.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU W
NOTE: If you use the command "W" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5.
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 5 when the Main Menu is received.
5. You will now receive the Daily Weight Charts screen which
looks like this:
--------------------------------------------------------
Daily Weight Charts

Do you wish to view the Weight Chart (Y/N):

Please type your First Name :

Please type your desired weight in Pounds :

What is your weight today :

--------------------------------------------------------
a. The questions will appear one at a time. Answer all of
them.
b. The first question ask if you wish to view the chart of
weights for men and women. This chart is also available
in the Recipe VIEW function and is provided here so that
you can brace yourself before you have look at what you
actually weigh. The Daily Weight Chart function will
continue even if you answer "N" (no) to this question.
Page # 24
c. The second question gets your first name to determine
which 60-day file will be retrieved to make the daily
weight computations for the chart. If another family
member has the same first name, use a variation of the
name or a number after the first name to establish and
maintain a separate chart.
d. The third question allows you to change your mind every
day about your weight goals. The chart presented will
be adjusted accordingly.
6. You will now receive your customized weight chart which can
contain as much a 60 days of weight data. This chart will build
as you use it. We recommend that you only add a new weight once
each day, as multiple accesses will cause the chart to build -
with each new entry counted as a day of weight charting. NOTE:
If you wish to view your accumulated weight statistics without
incrementing the chart, type "VIEW" (or the letter "V") as the
answer to the question "WHAT IS YOUR WEIGHT TODAY".
NOTE: If you are starting a new chart, your first entry will
cause only 1 line to appear when the chart is displayed for the
first time. Remember, 1 day equals 1 bar ... 60 days (the max)
equals 60 bars. Starting with the 61st day, only the last 60
days are graphically represented. For a DEMO of a 55 day weight
chart, specify 'LARRY4' in answer to the question 'Please Type
Your First Name:' and a file with 55 days of data will be
displayed.
7. Press any key when viewing the Daily Weight Chart to return
to the Compu-Chef Main Menu.
8. Upon receiving the Main Menu you may choose to:
VIEW, ADD, UPDATE, DELETE, UPDATE and VIEW WEIGHT CHARTS,
or PRINT this Manual. Pressing Escape will cause
the program to terminate if chosen at the Main Menu.

sheets of paper, switched on, and is set for either defaults or
the print font desired before selecting the manual print function.
Page # 26
2-6. RECIPE SEARCH FUNCTION
The following instructions are a step-by-step guide for using the
search functions of Compu-Chef.
1. Access the Compu-Chef sub-directory (path) by typing:
CD\COMPCHEF
2. Run the program by typing:
COOKMENU ... or ... COOKMENU S
NOTE: If you use the command "S" you will skip both the
Compu-Chef logo and the Main Menu. Move to Step # 5
3. You will receive the Compu-Chef logo. Press the <Enter> key
(or any key) to receive the Main Menu.
4. Press the number 7 when the Main Menu is received. (You may
also use the up and down arrow keys or the approriate command
line letters for selections from the Main Menu.) The ESC and
CTRL-Q functions will return you to the SYSTEM from the Main
Menu. ALT-Q will refresh the Main Menu screen.
5. You will receive a series of selection criteria screens.
These screens will ask you to make choices relating to the
selection for view of qualifying recipes.
6. The first screen received determines whether you will search
the data base on the basis of nutrition qualifiers or by
ingredient qualifiers. Answer 'N' if you wish to search by
nutrition (i.e., calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates,
calcium, and/or sodium). Pressing the <Esc> key will cause
the program to terminate.
SEARCHING BY NUTRITION:
7. If you pressed the 'N' key, you will be asked to choose one
(or more) nutrition codes. The codes are:
Calories ................. C
Protein .................. P
Fat ...................... F
Carbohydrates ............ R
Calcium .................. L
Sodium (Salt) ............ S
Example: If you type in 'LPC' in response, you have qualified
Calories, Protein, and Calcium.
Page # 27
8. Next, you will be asked to type in 'relational operators'.
Sounds pretty technical, huh? Well, it's not to bad as there
are only three possible in Compu-Chef and they are:
< ... (Shift/Comma on the keyboard) ... represents LESS THAN,
> ... (Shift/Period on the keyboard) ... represents MORE THAN,
B ...................represents BETWEEN (or a range of values).
Example: Let's say that you are looking for calories less than
300 per serving with a protein count of greater than
30 grams, and sodium levels between 200 and 600
milligrams:
a. You would have chosen CPS on the previous screen
to qualify calories, protein, and sodium, then
b. You would select '<' at the prompt: Choose a
relational value for Calories ...
c. You would select '>' at the prompt: Choose a
relational value for Protein and ...
d. You would select 'B' at the prompt: Choose a
relational value for Sodium.
9. Now you will receive screens to accept the actual values for
the relationships that you've just chosen. Type in the correct
numbers at the prompts.
Example (continued from para 8):
b. You would type '300' at the prompt: Accept a
relational value for Calories ...
c. You would type '30' at the prompt: Accept a
relational value for Protein and ...
d. You would type '200' then '600' prompt: Choose a
relational value for Sodium.
!!! CONTINUE AT PARAGRAPH 13 !!!
Page # 28
SEARCHING BY INGREDIENT
10. If you pressed the "I" key in your selection of type of
look-up, you will now receive the screen with the prompt:
'Select Ingredient or Press <ENTER> Below:'
11. The prompt "Ingredient #1: ?" will appear. You will either
type in the name of an ingredient that you wish to locate
or press the <ENTER> key. You will receive prompts for 5
ingredients. From 1 to 5 ingredients may be selected.
12. IMPORTANT! If you choose (for instance) bread, sugar, and
water; only those recipes that contain bread AND sugar AND
water will display! This is simplistic but should suffice
for the types of look-ups needed for indentifying recipes
based on certain ingredients available in your pantry.
13. Having entered the last value in your selection list, the
program will clear the screen and give you the message
"Compiling List of Compu-Chef Recipes". This message will
display for approximately 10 seconds for each 100 Compu-Chef
recipes on file.
14. Next, the informational display "Surveying File: (filename)"
will display (very rapidly) until Compu-Chef finds a recipe
that meets the criteria that you have established. When a
recipe fully qualifies, that recipe is displayed using the
Compu-Chef Main Menu function # 1 (VIEW Recipes). All
facilities available to the VIEW function are available.
15. You may continue your search while viewing a qualified
recipe by pressing the CTRL-Q keys. You will then be
given the opportunity of discontinuing the search process
by answering 'N' to the question: "Continue Y/N?". If
any other key is pressed, the search will continue to
find, and display, qualifying recipes.
Page # 29
3-1. NON-MENU FUNCTIONS OF COMPU-CHEF
1. After a while you may get tired of seeing the beautiful Compu-
Chef LOGO (although we never do!); if so, you can access all
the menu functions and non-menu functions by typing the
following from the command line:
COOKMENU V ... accesses the recipe VIEW function
COOKMENU A ... accesses the recipe ADD function
COOKMENU U ... accesses the recipe UPDATE function
COOKMENU D ... accesses the recipe DELETE function
COOKMENU W ... accesses the DAILY WEIGHT CHARTS function
COOKMENU M ... accesses the PRINT MANUAL function
COOKMENU S ... accesses the recipe SEARCH function
COOKMENU X ... accesses the VERSION / COPYRIGHT function
COOKMENU F ... accesses the CONFIGURATION function
COOKMENU [drv:][pathname.ext] ... INSTANT access to recipes
2. All of the command line access features are fully explained
in the main body of the manual with the exception of 'M',
'X', 'F', and the INSTANT VIEW features. An explanation of
these features follows:
3. COOKMENU M ... Begins printing the manual on your printer
directly from the command line. Make sure the printer is
on-line and has paper loaded.
4. COOKMENU X ... Tells you the version number, the authors of
the application, serves as notice of copyright, and gives
you your registration number. If you have the ShareWare
version the registration number is always 500000000.
5. COOKMENU F ... Goes directly to the configuration of your
recipe files and this disk manual. These files need not
be configured for 700k floppy and hard disk users, but
may be if desired (optional). If you can't find your
recipes, use this function and tell Compu-Chef where you've
put them.
6. COOKMENU [drv:][pathname.ext] ... Is direct access to your
favorite recipes. There is a catch. You have to know the
file name of the recipe to access it directly. We've tried
to use the six-characters available to indicate what the
recipe is and you should do the same when you add your own.
Page # 30
4-1. NEW FEATURES
1. Here is some extra help for anyone having difficulty using
the Compu-Chef ADD or UPDATE functions. Extra HELP screens
are available while you are accessing pages 2 through 5 of
the ADD and UPDATE functions. These HELP screens are
especially useful while editing page # 2 of the ADD or
UPDATE functions (the List of Ingredients screen).
2. If you get stuck, the first HELP screen to call for is the
"HELP Available" HELP screen. You can see this screen by
pressing <ENTER> then <ALT>"H".
3. The "HELP Available" HELP screen tells you how to access
the "Using the Keyboard" HELP screen, the "Measures" HELP
screen, and the "Edit Functions" HELP screen.
4. Use these HELP screens as "keys" to understanding what
the program needs during the critical input phase of your
ingredients list.
5. Also NEW is a feature that I call DIRECT ACCESS TO NUTRITION
DATA. This function is available to individuals that want
to use the nutrition look-up and computation facilities of
Compu-Chef in a direct manner. The following is a detailed
explanation of how this is done:
a. Exit Compu-Chef.
b. Ensure that you are in the \COMPCHEF\ sub-directory.
c. Type ... COOKUPDT !{quantity,measure,ingredient}
(1) Do NOT type in the "{" or "}" symbols.
(2) "quantity" is a number or number plus fraction.
(3) "measure" is a cooking measurement.
(4) "ingredient" is the name of the ingredient for which
nutrition information is desired.
(5) Example: COOKUPDT !1,CUP,SUGAR <ENTER>
(6) The above example will yield the nutrition data for
1 cup of sugar.
Page # 31
4-2. Facility to "lock out" ADD, UPDATE, and DELETE Functions.
1. Let's suppose that you are concerned that someone may add,
update, or delete recipes that you have collected using the
Compu-Chef data base functions. Provided as a new feature in
Version 1991.3 is a lock out feature that disables access to
Add, Update, and Delete.
2. You enable the lock-out using the following sequence:
a. Run "Compu-Chef" for configuration ...
C:
CD\COMPCHEF
COOKMENU CONFIG
b. Using the arrow keys (or Enter), place the cursor on
the line of the displayed configuration file that says
"PASSWORD" (line # 6).
c. Type over "PASSWORD" any other word (case is not
important).
d. Press the escape key (Esc) to save and exit.
e. When you run Compu-Chef again, you will not be able to
access the Add, Update, or Delete functions of the Main
Menu.
3. If the lock-out is enabled, you may disable the lock-out by
reinserting the work "PASSWORD" in line # 6 of the configuation
file. This is accomplished using the following procedure ...
a. Run "Compu-Chef" for configuration ...
C:
CD\COMPCHEF
COOKMENU CONFIG
b. Using the arrow keys (or Enter), place the cursor on
line # 6 of the configuration file.
c. Type over the word that you find there with the word
"PASSWORD" (no quotes, i.e. type PASSWORD).
d. Press the escape key (Esc) to save and exit.
e. When you run Compu-Chef again, you will be able to
access the Add, Update, or Delete functions of the Main
Menu.
Page # 32
4-3. Use of Compu-Chef as a BBS "door" (distributed processing
using a BBS file server).
1. We authorize the use of a single (registered) copy of Compu-
Chef on bulletin boards that feature cooking and nutrition IF
the following conditions are met:
a. Alter line # 6 of the configuration file (see procedure at
4-2 above) so that the word "PASSWORD" does not appear.
b. No site license is implied to use the Add, Update, and
Delete functions of Compu-Chef by persons not registering
an individual copy of Compu-Chef by payment of $29.95 to
DB Software.
2. We allow the use, transfer, and trading of any recipes
created using Compu-Chef. Your recipes are your own. The
recipes provided with the Shareware and registered copies
of Compu-Chef are not copyrighted. We encourage you to
plan and establish clubs and organizations that freely trade
the recipe and nutrition information made available by our
cookbook/nutrition system.
3. We do not encourage, or allow, any unregistered user to
violate our copyright to this system by using Compu-Chef
more than 30 days without payment of the registration fee
of $29.95.
4. The use of Compu-Chef in a BBS interactive environment
that allows the use of the lockable Add, Update, and Delete
functions is a violation of our copyright and authority to
license. Full use of a registered version to unregistered
users (outside of immediate family) is the same as giving
away our work in any other fashion. BBS operators are
responsible to DB Software, Inc. for the use of this soft-
ware even if you have paid for one registered copy and even
if you charge nothing for using Compu-Chef.
5. We require that any person reviewing Compu-Chef use the
Shareware version available from many disk distributers.
