  10.     While  the  bike   is  on  the
  11. floor, use two tests to check your
  12. headset.  First,  lift  the  front
  13. wheel  off the  ground by  holding
  14. the top tube of  the frame. If the
  15. headset   is  loose   enough,  the
  16. handlebar  and  front  wheel  will
  17. flop  to  one  side  or the other.
  18. Next,  apply  the  front  brake or
  19. hold the front wheel from turning,
  20. and push  the bike back  and forth
  21. an  inch or  two on  the floor.  A
  22. loose headset will click a little.

  26.     The headset  adjusts like most
  27. bike   bearings,   there   is   an
  28. adjustable cup or cone at the top,
  29. and  a  locknut   above  that.  By
  30. screwing  the  adjustable  cone or
  31. cup  closer to  the bearings,  the
  32. adjustment  gets tighter.  On many
  33. headsets there  is an interlocking
  34. mechanism that means you will have
  35. to  loosen   the  locknut  several
  36. turns. On some  there are actually
  37. two locknuts that must be loosened
  38. before    you    can    make   the
  39. adjustment.
