First adjust index shifting
(sometimes generically called
S.I.S. which stands for Shimano
Index Shifting) just like ordinary
systems. After the derailleur
limits are set, you have to adjust
the length of the cable so the
clicks in the shifter line up with
the action of the rear derailleur.
If the shifting is noisy or does
not shift every time you click the

shifter into another position, try
tightening the adjusting barrel,
the hollow screw that the cable
wire goes through on the derail-
leur, about 1/4 turn. The shifting
may get better or worse. If
better, turn the barrel another
1/4 turn in the same direction. If
worse, turn it the other way. Fool
around with the adjustment until
it is the best possible.
