  5.      Most language is spoken language, and most words once
  6. they are uttered, vanish forever into the air.  But such is
  7. not the case with language spoken during courtroom trials,
  8. for there exists an army of court reporters whose job it is
  9. to take down and preserve every statement made during the
  10. proceedings. 
  11.  
  12.      Court is now in session, and here are my favorite
  13. transcripts, all recorded by America's keepers of the word:

  17.      Q:   What is your brother-in-law's name? 
  18.      A:   Borofkin. 
  19.      Q:   What is his first name? 
  20.      A:   I can't remember. 
  21.      Q:   He's been your brother-in-law for 45 years, and   
  22.           you can't remember his first name? 
  23.      A:   No.  I tell you I'm too excited.  (Rising from the
  24.           witness chair and pointing to Mr. Borofkin).      
  25.           Nathan, for God's sake, tell them your first name!

  29.      A:   I refuse to answer that question.

  163.              unanimous? 
  164.      Foreman:  Yes, your Honor, we're all alike --          
  165.                temporarily insane.

  169.      THE COURT:  Now, as we begin, I must ask you to        
  170.                  banish all present information and         
  171.                  prejudice from  your mind if you have      
  172.                  any.

  175.      Q:   When he went, had you gone and had she, if she    
  176.           wanted  to and were able, for the time being      
  177.           excluding all the restraints on her not to go     
  178.           also, would he have brought you, meaning you and  
  179.           she, with him to the station? 
  180.      A:   MR. BROOKS.  Objection.  That question should be  
  181.           taken out and shot.

  198.      A:   Yes, she did.

  262.           very bad persons that will do bodily harm and     
  263.           seriously kill someone.
