  15. time the User's Guide and on-disc help were prepared. It also
  16. contains other important information to help you use this
  17. product successfully. If you are uncertain how to make a
  18. recommended change, please refer to the documentation that came
  19. with Windows and/or your computer system.

  35. A. Disk Compression
  36.  
  37. If you are using a disk compression utility, the available hard
  38. disk space reported by the installation program may not be
  39. accurate. Disk compression utilities can only ESTIMATE available
  40. hard disk space. If the installation process is not successful,
  41. you may need to free additional hard disk space by removing
  42. unneeded files or applications from your hard drive.

  45. B. Network Installation
  46.  
  47. This product is designed as a "stand-alone" application and does
  48. not support use by multiple users over a network.
  49.

  51. C. Installation for Windows 95/98
  52.  
  53. NOTE: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia will not install/run on
  54. a Windows 3.1 system.
  55.  
  56. Compton's suggests that you exit all applications before
  57. installing this product. Other programs and drivers running on
  58. the computer may interfere with the installation process.

  60. Simply place the encyclopedia disc in the CD-ROM drive. The
  61. Windows 95/98 AutoPlay function automatically offers the option to
  62. install the program. Click on "Install" to begin the installation.
  63.  
  64. If the program disc is already in the CD-ROM drive and you have
  65. bypassed the AutoPlay function, follow these steps to begin the
  66. installation: Click on "Start" and select "Run ...". In the
  67. "Open" box, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter. If your CD-ROM
  68. drive is not drive "D", substitute the letter of your CD-ROM
  69. drive when you type this statement. For example, if your CD-ROM
  70. drive is drive "E", type "E:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.

  72. When the program has finished installing the files, you are
  73. notified that the installation has been completed. Then,
  74. whenever you want to use Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia,
  75. simply insert the disc into your CD-ROM drive and click on 
  76. "OK" when asked if you want to run the program. To start the 
  77. program when the CD is already in your CD-ROM drive, click on
  78. "Start", choose "Programs", choose "Compton's Home Library",
  79. choose the "Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia" folder,
  80. and then choose "1999 Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia".

  83. D. Meeting the Minimum System Requirements
  84.  
  85. The encyclopedia installation program automatically determines
  86. if your computer system meets the minimum requirements to run
  87. the encyclopedia. If your system fails to meet the requirements,
  88. the installation program tells you exactly which requirements
  89. were not met. Three potential problems you may encounter and
  90. their solutions are described below:
  91.  
  92.     "Detected: No suitable wave device"
  93.                  or
  94.     "Detected: No MIDI device"
  95.                  or
  96.     "Detected: No suitable MIDI device"
  97.  
  98.      If you get any of these messages, make sure that you have
  99.      installed the Windows drivers that came with your sound
  100.      board. The encyclopedia requires at least one wave device
  101.      capable of at least 8-bit mono at 22.050kHz, and at least
  102.      one MIDI device with FM synthesis, all channels.
  103.  
  104.      NOTE: Because of their special hardware setup, certain IBM
  105.      Aptiva and Thinkpad systems may generate these messages
  106.      even though they DO have the proper equipment and software.
  107.      If you own one of these systems and encounter one of the
  108.      above messages, disregard the message and proceed with the
  109.      installation.

  111. To check that your system has met the minimum requirements, you
  112. can run the program CNMSYSI.EXE, located in the "\WIN32"
  113. directory.
  114.  
  115. Alternatively, load the encyclopedia and click on the "Help"
  116. button. Then, while holding down the "Ctrl" key on your
  117. keyboard, click on the "About CIE" button. A screen will display
  118. the minimum program requirements and the components found on
  119. your system.

  122. II. Troubleshooting
  123. *********************************************************
  124. This product has been successfully tested with a wide variety of
  125. hardware and peripheral equipment. It should be noted, however,
  126. that Microsoft Windows is a "device-independent" operating
  127. system that relies on device drivers to communicate with the
  128. various devices on your system. Occasionally, issues may occur
  129. with one of these drivers. Conflicts with sound cards, video
  130. displays, and printers are often resolved by reconfiguring or
  131. updating the device drivers supplied by the manufacturers. This
  132. product is not designed specifically for compatibility with any
  133. particular hardware item.

  136. A. Troubleshooting for Windows 95/98
  137.  
  138. 1. Font Problems/Font Error Messages when Starting the
  139. Encyclopedia
  140.  
  141. The encyclopedia requires that certain fonts be present on your
  142. system to display text correctly. If the program is unable to
  143. find the fonts it needs, some text may display poorly or in
  144. unreadable fonts. See also the section "Encyclopedia Text Is 
  145. Illegible or Displays in Wing Ding or Symbol Font" below.
  146.  
  147. If the encyclopedia cannot find the proper fonts, you may see
  148. one of the following error messages after the introductory
  149. screen:
  150.  
  151.     "The following TrueType Fonts were not found: ..."
  152.                     or
  153.     "The following Fonts were not found: ..."
  154.  
  155.       To correct this problem, make a note of the missing font
  156.       or fonts listed, then exit the encyclopedia program.
  157.  
  158.       Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings" and then 
  159.       "Control Panel". In the "Control Panel" window, double-click
  160.       on the "Fonts" folder. Then from the "File" menu choose 
  161.       "Install New Font...". 
  162.  
  163.       Move to the "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" directory on your hard
  164.       drive. A list of available fonts should appear; click on
  165.       the font that was listed as missing in the error message
  166.       and then click on the "OK" button. Then click on the
  167.       "Close" or "Cancel" button; there is no need to restart
  168.       Windows.

  170.       If no list of fonts appears in "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM", consult
  171.       your Windows documentation for assistance in loading
  172.       Windows fonts.
  173.  
  174. 2. Changing the MIDI Playback Device
  175.  
  176. The encyclopedia program automatically detects the MIDI device on
  177. your system upon loading. To change the MIDI device used by the
  178. encyclopedia, click on the "Help" button on the encyclopedia
  179. program's control bar, and then click on the "Preferences" button.
  180. Click on the "Sound & Media" tab, and then click on "Setup
  181. MIDI Device ..." to manually select a MIDI device.

  183. 3. Boosting Performance
  184.  
  185. Turning off button sounds will boost performance. To turn off
  186. button sounds, click on the "Help" button on the encyclopedia's
  187. control bar, choose "Preferences", choose the "Sound & Media"
  188. tab, and then remove the "X" or checkmark from the "Play sounds
  189. when buttons are clicked" checkbox.

  191. 4. Program Installed Successfully but Will Not Launch
  192.  
  193. If this happens, you will need to make two changes: first, locate 
  194. the "PREFS.INI" file in the program's directory on your hard drive. 
  195. In the "[view]" section, insert a semicolon (;) at the start of 
  196. the line reading "SplashFile=.\splash.spl". Next, go to the 
  197. "[Prefs]" section and change the line reading "ButtonSounds=1" to
  198. "ButtonSounds=0". The encyclopedia should now launch
  199. successfully.
