Imagecopy 3 - the essential image utility
-----------------------------------------
Imagecopy 3 is a multi-purpose image utility which can be used to perform
the following tasks:
* Copy images from screen in any ST/TT/Falcon video mode.
* Display images and slide shows in any ST/TT/Falcon video mode.
* Print images and screen dumps in black and white or colour on a wide
range of printers: 9-pin, 24-pin, Bubblejet, Deskjet, and Laserjet.
* Catalogue images with up to 60 or more images on a single page.
* Create halftone images to use with other programs (wordprocessors etc.)
* Convert images between different formats or to different colour types
(e.g. true-colour to 256-colour).
Imagecopy 3 supports an extensive range of image formats. It can read and
write: DEGAS, GIF, IFF, IMG, JFIF (JPEG), PC Paintbrush (PCX), Prism
Paint, RSC free image, Targa, TIFF, True Paint, and Windows Bitmap. Other
read-only formats include: Art Director, Calamus Raster Graphic, DR
Doodle, Macpaint, Neochrome, OS/2 Bitmap, Pictor, Pixart, Portable Bitmap,
Spectrum, and Tiny. IFF support includes standard IFF, Amiga HAM, PC
Deluxe Paint, and ST Deluxe Paint. IMG support includes Hyperpaint IMG,
Flair Paint IMG, Ventura Publisher IMG, and XIMG.
Other features include a batch processing facility (convert or print
batches of images), and a user-friendly GEM interface. Colour images may
be printed in monochrome (with halftones) and in colour. If you don't
have a colour printer, Imagecopy can produce colour separations which may
be superimposed to produce full-colour printouts on monochrome printers.
Easy-to-use colour controls allow you to enhance the quality of colour
printouts.
The full version of Imagecopy 3 is supplied as a desk accessory and as a
stand-alone program, and is accompanied by a detailed 93-page manual,
which includes a tutorial section. (The demo version is only available in
stand-alone form.)

Using the demo version
----------------------
The demo version of Imagecopy is nearly identical with the full version,
except that images are overwritten with a program message when they are
dislayed, printed, or saved. Printed images are also overwritten with a
polka-dot pattern of white dots. There is no accessory version of the demo
program.
In the absence of a printed manual here are some hints on using the demo
version of Imagecopy 3:
1. System requirements
----------------------
The demo version of Imagecopy 3 can be used with any ST, STE, TT, or
Falcon computer which has at least 1 megabyte of memory. The commercial
version is also supplied in a cut-down form (without JPEG support) which
can be used on machines with only half a megabyte of memory.
2. User interface
-----------------
Use [Alternate] keystrokes for underlined menu or dialog options. Menu
options can be accessed with the mouse (like normal GEM menus), with
single-key shortcuts (which are configurable with the 'menu keys' option)
or with multi-key shortcuts indicated by underlining.
3. Copying images
-----------------
To copy (snapshot) images, select Copy (or press [Alt-Help]) and use the
mouse to select the area of screen which you want to snapshot (press
[Clr/Home] to select the whole screen). Press [Return] or click the right
mouse button within the copy box to copy the image. You can copy larger
than screen images by displaying them in full-screen mode and pressing
[C]. The accessory version of Imagecopy which is supplied with the
full package can be used to copy images from within other programs
(including non-GEM programs).
Use the 'copying format' dialog to select the format used for copying
images. This does not include a JPEG option, but you can select 'JFIF'
(= JPEG) as an option for converting images.
The full version of Imagecopy can copy images in some low-memory
situations which the demo version is unable to handle.
4. Viewing images
-----------------
Press [Esc] or click the right mouse button to toggle between GEM windows
and full-screen display for viewing images. Full-screen images can be
scrolled by moving the mouse to the edge of the screen.
Press [Return] when an image is being viewed to display information about
the image.
Select a folder of images instead of a single image when using the
slide-show option. You can use wildcards (such as *.TIF) to limit the
selection.
Press [Esc] or [Undo] to interrupt a slide show. [Undo] can also be used
to abort other operations such as loading or printing images.
You can improve the quality of images which are displayed in video
modes with fewer colours by changing options in the 'screen mapping'
dialog. For monochrome monitors select 'random dithering', and for
colour monitors select 'adaptive palette' and 'random dithering'.
These options are slower than the default options. For a greyscale
display on colour monitors select 'greyscale' in the 'screen display'
dialog: this gives a better representation of image tones at the
expense of colour.
5. Printing images
------------------
Use the 'Printer type' dialog to configure Imagecopy for your printer. The
printer types which are listed will work with any compatible printer:
'Epson 9-pin' works with any 9-pin Epson-compatible printer and so on.
Select the 'CMY colour' or 'CMYK colour' option to print in colour on a
colour printer (9-pin, 24-pin, or inkjet). If your printer can mix black
with other colours, you will normally get better results using CMYK
colour. Most colour printers, apart from the Deskjet 500C, can print using
CMYK colour.
Select 'CMY separation' or 'CMYK separation' to print in colour on a
monochrome printer. You will need to have separate print ribbons or
cartridges for each primary print colour: Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow; or
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. If you have a Deskjet 500C printer, you
can select 'CMY+K separation' to get CMYK colour.
Use the 'print colours' dialog to adjust print colours. 'Brightness'
lightens an image, and 'contrast' increases the contrast between colours
and shades. Set 'saturation' to 0 if you want to speed up the printing of
true-colour images, but leave it at its default setting for palette-colour
images (and best-quality printing of true-colour images).
Use 'size' in the 'print layout' dialog to control the size of printed
images. The default setting (0x0 cm) prints images at their original pixel
size. Otherwise, 2x2 cm (etc.) prints images within a 2x2 cm square while
preserving their aspect ratio (a landscape image will be 2 cm wide when it
is printed, but less than 2 cm high).
Use the 'page size' dialog to configure Imagecopy for the size of paper
you are using. You can also use this dialog to set minimum page margins,
and to enter offsets which adjust for the fact that some printers are
unable to print at the top or left of the page. To calculate the correct
offsets, set the left and top offsets to zero and print an image 2 cm.
from the left and top of the page (using 'Xpos' and 'Ypos' to set the
position). When you have done this, measure the actual distances with a
ruler: if they are greater than 2 cm. you should enter the differences as
horizontal and vertical offsets.
6. Cataloguing images
---------------------
Select 'catalogue' and 'file names' in the 'print layout' dialog to
catalogue images. If you have a line-based printer (such as a dot-matrix
printer or inkjet printer), Imagecopy will print a column of images and
ask you to refeed the paper. Laser printers can catalogue images without
having the paper refed. It is important that you configure Imagecopy for
paper size before using this option (see previous paragraph).
7. Printing screen dumps
------------------------
To print screen dumps, select Print Image or press [Control-Alt-Help].
If you have TOS 1.0, use the 'Alt-help' dialog to configure
[Shift-Alt-Help] for printing screen dumps.
8. Creating halftone images
---------------------------
You can use Imagecopy to create halftone images from colour images,
which can then be printed from monochrome wordprocessors and DTP
programs. Select 'IMG file' output in the 'printer type' dialog and then
'print' the image at the required size.
9. Batch operations
-------------------
To process batches of images (or view slide shows), select a folder of
images instead of a single image (you can use wildcards such as *.JPG to
limit the selection). You can also use batch files (ASCII lists of
images). The full version of Imagecopy contains a program for creating
and editing batch files.
10. Falcon computers
--------------------
Imagecopy 3 can use the Atari/Brainstorm DSP decoder to load JPEG images
more quickly than is possible with Imagecopy's own internal routine. If
you have a Falcon computer, copy JPEGD.PRG into an auto folder. Imagecopy
will then use this program to load JPEG images. (Imagecopy uses its own
routine to load JPEG images on non-Falcon computers.)
11. Configuring Imagecopy
-------------------------
You can use the 'save' button in Imagecopy's Options dialogs to save
default options. Avoid changing the 'INF file' option in the 'system
preferences' dialog. The full version of Imagecopy can save options to
a separate INF file or to its own program file, but the demo version
has been compressed using a program packer and therfore requires a
separate INF file. The 'global' option allows you to make global changes
to Imagecopy's settings.
Images
------
The demo version of Imagecopy 3 is supplied with the following images.
Copyright images may be used freely with Imagecopy or other programs, but
should not be redistributed except as printed hardcopy. JPEG images can
take a while to load on standard STs.
