  15. 1.  Important Notes
  16. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  18. We strongly recommend that you turn your computer off anytime you connect 
  19. or disconnect the QuickCam from either the parallel port or the keyboard port.
  20.  
  21. Don't attach more than one QuickCam (grayscale or color) to a computer.  This 
  22. won't damage your computer but they won't work together with this version of 
  23. the QuickCam software.
  24.  
  25. If you are a Windows 95 user, your computer may crash if you  try to run both 
  26. QuickPICT and QuickMovie at the same time. 
  27.  
  28. Be sure your monitor is displaying at least 16 bit (high) color. (See Control 
  29. Panels:Display:Settings in Windows 95 or consult your manual for Windows 
  30. 3.1-based computers.)
  31.  
  32. Do not plug the keyboard power adapter into one computer and  the parallel 
  33. port connector into a different computer.  Doing this will void your warranty.
  34.

  41. 2. Getting the Best Picture and Frame Rate from QuickCam
  42. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  43.  
  44. To get the best image from your QuickCam, first make sure that you have 
  45. adequate lighting. All of the other image adjustments depend on the presence of 
  46. an adequate amount of light. As a rule of thumb, if the lighting is such that you 
  47. would use a flash with a normal 35mm camera, you need to add more light for 
  48. your QuickCam. This is probably true in most home environments where 
  49. illumination is provided by a single light source.
  50.  
  51. One of the most important factors in getting the highest possible frame rate is 
  52. having enough illumination. The less light there is, the longer the shutter will 
  53. have to stay open to capture each frame, which results in lower frame rate. 
  54. Simply by increasing the light level, you can decrease the necessary shutter 
  55. speed (the Brightness setting) and increase the frame rate.
  56.  
  57. If you are using a Color QuickCam, make sure that your monitor is set to 
  58. display the same number of colors or grays as the QuickCam is capturing. For 
  59. example, if you capture video at thousands of colors, make sure your video 
  60. display adapter is set to display thousands of colors. If the QuickCam has to 
  61. dither the image to match your display, frame rates will decrease. 
  62.  
  63. If you are using a Color QuickCam, use the Thousands (VIDEC) setting (the 
  64. default setting). In this mode, Color QuickCam implements VIDEC, which will 
  65. increase frame rates.
  66.  
  67. If you are using a Color QuickCam and there is enough light, you may get 
  68. increased frame rates if you turn off the Low-Light Image Filter checkbox in 
  69. the Camera Adjustments dialog. 
  70.  
  71. If you are using a Color QuickCam and do not need the maximum amount of 
  72. detail in each frame, choose a reduced Sharpness level. If you choose the 
  73. middle or the lowest value for Sharpness, you will get higher frame rates than if 
  74. you choose the highest Sharpness value.
  75.  
  76. To increase your frame rates, choose a smaller image size. Capturing a smaller 
  77. image size results in faster frame rates.
  78.  
  79. Make sure youÆre running only QuickMovie. Close any other application that 
  80. may take processing time away from QuickMovie.
  81.  
  82. When recording a movie your on-screen frame rate will appear to drop. This is 
  83. because QuickMovie is making sure that you get the full rate saved to disk first; 
  84. screen updates are secondary to captured frame rates. When you play back your 
  85. saved movie, you will see the full frame rate captured by QuickMovie.
  86.  
  87. To playback a movie recorded using VIDEC compression on a different 
  88. computer, you will need to install the VIDEC decompression software 
  89. (VIDEC.DLL). This software is available on the Connectix Web page and 
  90. Connectix online service forums. See How to Contact Connectix Corporation.

  94. 3.  Known Issues
  95. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  97. Do not attempt to use the Full Screen mode in QuickPICT, QuickMovie or the 
  98. QuickCam Screen Saver in low memory configurations (12 megabytes or less).  
  99. The image may freeze or produce unexpected results.
  100.  
  101. If you take a picture to the clipboard using thousands mode (Windows 3.1 
  102. only), you will not be able to view the picture using Microsoft Paint or the 
  103. Clipboard Viewer.  The image is, however, available to other applications 
  104. which support 16 bit images.
  105.  
  106. If you are a Windows 95 user, your computer may crash if you try to run both 
  107. QuickPICT and QuickMovie at the same time. 
  108.  
  109. In the QuickPICT Save dialog box, changing the File Type in the pop-up menu 
  110. does not change the extension of the file name. You need to change the 
  111. extension manually. If you select Bitmap use .BMP, JPEG use .JPG, TIFF use 
  112. .TIF, AOL ART use .ART.
  113.  
  114. If you have a grayscale QuickCam the Color Camera installer will disable the 
  115. original QuickCam driver.  You'll have to reinstall the original software to use 
  116. the grayscale camera again.
  117.  
  118. Do not use the screen saver and auto capture at the same time. There is not 
  119. enough processing power available for the same camera to display a full screen 
  120. moving image while also saving a still image to disk.
  121.  
  122. If you've ever added a PC speaker driver (speaker.drv) to your system, it is 
  123. possible your computer will crash if you try to use the QuickCam software with 
  124. the driver installed.  We highly recommend
  125. uninstalling the PC speaker driver before attempting to use the QuickCam.
  126.  
  127. VIDEC compression is not available in QuickPICT or many other applications 
  128. that use the QuickCam to take a still picture.  It is designed primarily for video 
  129. capture and is available only in QuickMovie.

  133. 4.  Windows NT Notes
  134. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  135.  
  136. The Windows NT driver for the Color QuickCam was not ready in time for this 
  137. release. A beta version of the Color QuickCam Windows NT driver will be 
  138. available in the 1st Quarter of 1997 from our Web Site. The Grayscale 
  139. QuickCam Windows NT driver is included in this version.
  140.  
  141. Under Windows NT, the grayscale QuickCam may playback a movie at double
  142. speed.  Disabling audio in QuickMovie will correct the problem. 
  143.  
  144. If you choose to install SeeMail under Windows 3.1 or Window NT, the 
  145. ReadMe file may not appear after installation. To view the SeeMail ReadMe 
  146. file, open the SeeMail directory and double click the ReadMe.txt file.
  147.  
  148. We strongly recomend that Windows NT 3.51 users install Microsoft Service
  149. Pack #5 or later and Windows NT 4.0 users install Microsoft Service Pack #2
  150. or later.  The QuickCam software is not designed for Windows NT 3.50 or
  151. earlier and will not be supported.

  155. 5.  Installing both QuickCam and Color QuickCam with Windows 95
  156.     (Advanced Users Only)
  157. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  158.  
  159. NOTE: You only need to read this section if you have a Grayscale QuickCam
  160. and a Color QuickCam AND want to switch between both cameras on the fly.
  161.  
  162. This installer will disable previous versions of the QuickCam driver that may
  163. have been installed. It is possible to install both Color QuickCam and
  164. Grayscale QuickCam and switch between the two in the Multimedia Control Panel.
  165.  
  166. 1) Run the QuickCam Installer twice, selecting the Grayscale QuickCam first
  167. and Color QuickCam/Color QuickCam2 the second time.
  168.  
  169. 2) Open the Windows\System.ini file and make sure the following lines are in
  170. your [Drivers] section:
  171. MSVIDEO=qccolor.drv
  172. MSVIDEO1=quickcam.drv
  173. (Note, if you have other video input devices you can set them to MSVIDEO2, 
  174. MSVIDEO3, etc.)
  175.  
  176. 3) Reboot the computer.
  177.  
  178. You should now have both cameras entered in the Multimedia Control Panel, 
  179. Advanced Tab under Video Capture Devices. To switch between cameras, select 
  180. the driver for the current active camera and click properties. Click the 
  181. "Do not use this video capture device." and click "OK. Select the camera
  182. you would like to use and click properties. Click the "Use this video capture 
  183. device." and click "OK.
