- Eudora for Macintosh
- ====================
-
- -------------
- Version 1.5.1
- -------------
-
- This is the freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh. There is also
- a commercial version of Eudora called Eudora by QUALCOMM (Version 2.0
- and above). If you would like information about the commercial
- version, a brief description is provided in the Balloon Help menu of
- this freeware. Select About Commercial Eudora to display this dialog.
- You can also subscribe to the QUALCOMM Enterprise Software Technologies
- (QUEST) mailing list by selecting QUEST Mailing List from the Balloon
- Help menu. This list will provide subscribers with occasional
- information about Eudora, Eudora by QUALCOMM, and other QUEST
- products.
-
- The latest freeware version of Eudora for the Macintosh can be found on
- ftp.qualcomm.com, in the directory quest/eudora/mac/1.5. The Macintosh
- freeware user manual can also be found on ftp.qualcomm.com, in the
- directory quest/eudora/mac/documentation. The user manual is formatted
- in Microsoft Word format.
-
- Both the freeware and its documentation can also be retrieved via
- e-mail using QUALCOMM's list server. To obtain the freeware, send a
- message to majordomo@qualcomm.com with the body text as follows:
-
- get freeware Mac/Eudora.hqx
-
- If you want the native Power Macintosh version of the freeware, use the
- following message:
-
- get freeware Mac/Eudora/fat.hqx
-
- To obtain the user manual, send a message to majordomo@qualcomm.com
- with the body text as follows:
-
- get freeware Mac/doc.hqx
-
- The files will be returned to you as message attachments. Note that
- they are large files and may take some time to download to your
- desktop.
-
-
- --------------------
- Minimum Requirements
- --------------------
-
- - System 7 or later
- - At least 340K of RAM
-
-
- ------------
- Installation
- ------------
-
- To install the Eudora freeware, just copy it onto your hard disk.
-
-
- -------------
- Configuration
- -------------
-
- The first time you run Eudora you will have to edit some of the
- configuration information in order to be able to send and receive
- mail.
-
- Select Settings... from the Special Menu. The Settings dialog is then
- displayed with the Getting Started settings selected.
-
- The fields you need to review are:
-
- POP Account: To use Eudora, you must have an account on a computer
- that runs a POP3 server. This is the account to which your e-mail
- messages are delivered before they are transferred to the Eudora
- program on your PC. In this field, type your login name for this
- account and the full (domain) name of the computer, separating them
- with an "@" sign. For example, if your assigned login name is
- "carolyn," and the name of the computer where you receive e-mail is
- "uxh.cso.uiuc.edu," type "carolyn@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu" in this field.
-
- Real Name: Type your real name. Your name, as it appears here, is
- displayed in parentheses after your return address in your outgoing
- mail. It is also displayed in the sender column of all messages you
- send.
-
- SMTP Server: To send mail, a computer with an SMTP (Simple Mail
- Transfer Protocol) server program is necessary. You need not have a
- login to this computer, but you must have access to it through your
- network. If the computer on which you have your POP account is also an
- SMTP server, leave this field blank. Otherwise, specify the name of
- the computer you want to use as your SMTP server.
-
- Return Address: Normally, Eudora uses your POP account as your return
- address. If you wish to use a return address other than your POP
- account, enter it here.
-
-
- --------------
- COMPATIBILITY
- --------------
-
- System 6
- --------
- Symptom: Eudora refuses to run.
- Explanation: Sorry, Eudora does not run under System 6.
- Workaround: None.
-
-
- AppleTalk Remote Access:
- -----------------------
- Symptom: you get an alert that says "the selected port is in use".
- Explanation: If you have ARA's "Answer calls" option selected (from
- Remote Access Setup from Setup), and you have Eudora configured to use
- the Communications Toolbox on the same port that ARA uses, Eudora may
- be unable to connect. This is a conflict between the Communications
- Toolbox and ARA.
- Workaround: Turn "Answer calls" off in ARA if you have this problem.
-
-
- Apple Modem Tool
- ----------------
- Symptom: Eudora cannot login to your server, instead timing out during
- the navigation process.
- Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with version 1.0 of the Apple
- Modem Tool.
- Solution: You must use version 1.1 or later of the Apple Modem Tool, or
- the Hayes Modem Tool. We recommend the use of version 1.5 of the Apple
- Modem Tool.
-
-
- Moire
- -----
- Symptom: 68040-based Macintosh crashes when Eudora is launched.
- Explanation: Eudora is incompatible with the screensaver "Moire", when
- run with the 68040 caches enabled in 32-bit mode.
- Workaround: We suggest the freeware screensaver "DarkSide".
-
-
- NOW Utilities 4.0/SuperBoomerang
- -------------------------------
- Symptom: When launched, Eudora complains about being unable to open
- certain mailboxes, claiming they are "too large".
- Explanation: The "reopen documents" feature of SuperBoomerang is the
- problem It will not work as intended with Eudora, and it is really not
- necessary for Eudora anyway.
- Solution: You may disable this option by using the "Disable Re-Launch"
- menu in the "Exclude..." dialog in the SuperBoomerang control panel.
-
- Symptom: You cannot set your application to open TEXT files or your
- attachments folder.
- Explanation: Versions of NOW Utilities prior to 4.0.1 interfere with
- this aspect of Eudora.
- Solution: Upgrade to NOW Utilities 4.0.1 or later.
-
- Symptom: Eudora crashes when printing.
- Explanation: NOW Up-to-Date Reminder 2.0's Show Battery Status option
- causes crashes when Eudora is printing.
- Workaround: Turn Show Battery Status off. NOW is aware of the problem,
- and has promised to fix it.
-
-
- Norton Directory Assistance
- -------------------------
- Symptom: The attachment folder does not change, even if you set it with
- the dialog.
- Explanation: Norton Directory Assistance interferes with this aspect of
- Eudora.
- Workaround: Hold down the option key before clicking the button in the
- Attachments dialog, and keep it down until the Standard File dialog
- opens.
-
-
- Global Village PowerPort Modems
- ------------------------------
- Symptom: Attachments are sometimes corrupted or characters are lost in
- text messages.
- Explanation: Flow control in Powerbooks is very poor.
- Workaround: The best solution is to use version 1.5 of the Apple Modem
- Tool, set to "Software MNP" error correction.
-
-
- CAP/aufs
- --------
- Symptom: Mailboxes are frequently corrupted.
- Explanation: CAP/aufs has a bug that causes problems with Eudora and a
- few other programs.
- Solution: A patch is available (#168); be sure you have it.
-
-
- KA-Share
- --------
- Symptom: Attachments saved to KA-Share volumes cannot be opened from
- within Eudora.
- Explanation: KA-Share does not implement file id's.
- Workaround: Do not put your attachment folder on a KA-Share volume.
-
-
- Apollo
- ------
- Symptom: Crashes.
- Explanation: Version 1.0 of the Apollo application launching utility
- cannot handle long window names (such as Eudora generates) if
- configured to sort windows alphabetically.
- Workaround: Use the Window menus page of the Preferences dialog to set
- the sorting to front-to-back.
-
-
- Greg's Buttons
- -------------
- Symptom: Dialup Eudora does not work.
- Explanation: Versions of Greg's Buttons prior to 3.0 may interefere
- with the Communications Toolbox.
- Solution: Upgrade to Greg's Buttons 3.0 or later.
-
-
- FileGuard 2.5.1
- -------------
- There are reports of problems between Eudora and FileGuard 2.5.1.
-
-
- DoubleScroll 2.0.3
- ----------------
- Symptom: Eudora windows scroll off into oblivion.
- Explanation: DoubleScroll has a bug.
- Workaround: None. The author of DoubleScroll has promised a fix.
-
-
- MenuChoice 1.9
- -------------
- Symptom: Choosing an item from a submenu of the Apple menu causes
- strange dialogs and crashes in Eudora.
- Explanation: MenuChoice 1.9 has a bug.
- Solution: Get MenuChoice 2.0 or later.
-
-
- AutoDoubler
- -----------
- Symptom: None
- Explanation: Eudora normally uses "asynchronous" i/o to files, enabling
- smoother operations to fileservers. AutoDoubler interferes with
- asynchronous i/o.
- Workaround: Eudora automatically disables asynchronous i/o if it finds
- AutoDoubler on your system. StuffIt SpaceSaver (Aladdin Systems) does
- not suffer from this problem, so you could also switch to that.
-
-
- Mac340
- -------
- Symptom: Strange font displays in Mac340 and/or Eudora.
- Explanation: Eudora and Mac340 both use private fonts, and there is an
- id conflict.
- Workaround: Use a font other than "Mishawaka" in Eudora.
-

-
- We can't test all situations or Macintosh configurations. If you think
- your may have found a bug, we'd like to hear about it. Send mail to

- version of Eudora you're using, what you did, what happened, and what
- (if any) error messages Eudora gave.
