BBB:GLEANINGS 2 Samuel 16:10-12
Did he remember Michal's husband weeping in the same spot (3:16)
when he made her return?
2 Samuel 18
1. The revolutionists are conceited.
2. They are treacherous.
3. They are ambitious.
4. They are hypocritical.
5. They are failures as leaders.
6. They have no respect for parents.
7. They are cowardly and will ASSASSINATE you.
THIS IS THE BASIC IDEOLOGY OF MARX'S "COMMUNISM" AND LENIN'S
"MARXISM."
2 Samuel 18:22
Joab wants to break it to him easy without going into the details.
He is worried about Ahimaaz getting killed if he is the first to tell
what took place. Ahimaaz tries in vain to get David's attention on GOD
first (v. 28) but fails. V. 29 is a polite cover-up; he knew that
Absalom was dead.
2 Samuel 16:20
Absalom does not fully trust Hushai the Archite.
2 Samuel 16:22
Note the strange recompense (Job 31:3). David's sin is recompensed
on the very place where he sinned with Bathsheba: THE ROOFTOP.
2 Samuel 16:23
One of the most remarkable passages in over 31,000 verses. Leviticus
18:8 calls this a SIN and it is condemned in no uncertain terms with
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT as the payment, but here it is said to be "as if a
man had enquired at the oracles of God." No modern Fundamentalist or
Hebrew teacher could ever possibly figure the thing out. The truth is
it would be perfect advice IF THE PURPOSE WAS TO PERMANENTLY ALIENATE
DAVID AND ABSALOM SO THE PEOPLE WOULD KNOW IT. It is only with this in
mind that the counsel is LIKE the "oracles of God" for it is COMPLETELY
CONTRARY TO THE EXPRESS COMMANDMENTS OF THE ORACLES OF GOD! When all of
the commentators hit the passage they cancel all twelve words and
pretend they are not in the text.
2 Samuel 17:5-13
This speech is a masterpiece in the art of eloquent propaganda. In
v. 10 he takes advantage of the fear he had produced in vv. 8 and 9 and
when he finishes, the verdict is that his advice is BETTER than
Ahithophel's. It was not BETTER; it SOUNDED better. Thus men like Chuck
Swindoll, John MacArthur, Robert Schuller, and James Dobson make a good
living off of God's people. Observe that everything he said about David
in v. 10 is true. He also was a "MAN OF WAR" (v. 8). Hushai appeals to
Absalom's vanity (vv. 11-12) to gain his point.
We learn that the way to DECEIVE and MISGUIDE is:
1. Be POSITIVE (v. 7).
2. Appeal to fear of DISCORD and STRIFE (v. 8).
3. Appeal to personal safety (v. 9).
4. Appeal to tradition (v. 10).
5. Appeal to the EGO, the person's interest in himself (v. 11).
6. Use oratory ("good words and fair speeches," Rom. 16) to be
effective.
THIS DESCRIBES MODERN, TWENTIETH-CENTURY "FUNDAMENTALISM."
2 SAMUEL 17:13
Psalms 2 and 43 were probably written along this time.
2 SAMUEL 17:17
"WENCH" is the Old English for a servant girl.
2 SAMUEL 17:25
Here is the name that the quiz masters on the old $64,000 quiz
program (1950) insisted was not in the Bible. It is in the Bible. It is
the name of David's mother. Her name is "NAHASH."
2 SAMUEL 18:1-2
Observe the common military set- up: three units--frontal, flanking,
and reserve. He is still worried about Absalom (v. 5) and wants to
protect him.
2 SAMUEL 18:6
This is not Ephraim on the west bank of Jordan; it is an area that
was named "Ephraim" in memorium of Judges 12:5 (see also Hos. 12:11).
