TO THE INSTRUCTOR:
Q&A is a general purpose "question and answer" drill facility for education.
Students are presented with a question and 5 possible answers. They select the answer of their choice by clicking on it. A saxophone will play if they got the right answer, a boing if they did not. The program will keep a running percentage of their correct answers. When they reach the last card in the stack they will be put into a "review" mode which will go back through the quesions that they missed giving them a chance to try to answer the question again. In review mode they will have a chance to find out why the correct answer is the one given by clicking on the ? icon. (You may choose not to reveal the correct answer with the ? button -- it may just provide a hint to help them make their own choice.) Q&A is not intended to be a testing tool; rather, it's purpose it to provide students with a non-competitive chance to test their knowledge of a subject.
The best tests are those that teach you something.
If you haven't already done so, you should first try the stacks for yourself .

You can alter the questions, the answers, the hints, add new cards, add new stacks and graphics to cover the subject(s) of your choice.
To make this easier for you, I have provided a little helpful tool:

THE MAGIC BUTTON is a transparent button located in the upper right corner of the question and answer pages. (It is in the white area, not the gray background.) Clicking on it toggles you in and out of a mode where you can access the menu bar and alter the text items of a card.
Once you have found the Magic Button, you can easily change the Q&A cards.
Here's how:
TO ALTER A CARD IN A STACK:
(1) Go the stack and press the Magic Button until the menu bar appears.
(2) Change the text of the question and answers as you please using the mouse in the normal Mac fashion.
(now wasn't that easy?)
TO ADD A NEW CARD:
(1) Click on the magic button until the the menu bar is again visible.
(2) Go to the place in the stack where you want to add a card.
[Note: You can use the GO menu to do this or any of the many other ways to move from card to card in HyperCard.]
(3) Choose New Card from the EDIT menu or press command-n.
(4) Add the text and answers for the new question. (Remember that the tab key is short cut to jump to the next text field in a card.)
(5) Put a number (1 through 5) for the correct answer in the field at the bottom of the card.
(6) If you care to, you might provide a reason or a hint to explain why this is the correct answer. To do so click on the ? icon in the lower right corner of the page. When the text box appears type in your help text.
TO ADD A NEW STACK OF QUESTIONS:
(1) Duplicate one of the existing Q&A stacks.
(Use the Finder or choose Save a Copy... in the Hyercard.) You might delete all but the first card of the stack to clear it out. You can also use the paint tools to change the apearance of the card to suit your purpose. (Do this to the background of the stack, of course!)
(2) Type in the text for the new cards in the new stack.
A stack can have any number of cards and can contain graphics to illustrate the question. I have not done much with this powerful capability of HyperCard. As is always the case with HyperCard, the possiblities are limited only by your imagination!
(3) Go the the Q&A stack (the one you are on now).
[NOTE: You might add a new card to the Q&A stack or create a new Q&A stack then alter its background to better represent your subject if it is not Astronomy.]
(2) Choose the button tool from the tools menu.
(2) Click on one of the existing buttons to select it.
(3) Copy and Paste it to duplicate it.
(4) Double click on the new button and give it the name of your new stack of questions.
That's it!
>>> When you are all done you should save a copy of everything and then, on the copy of the Q&A stack that your students use, you should delete this field and the button "to the instructor" which displays it. Please leave the other button, "about Q&A," in place.

Q&A is one of my first ventures in Stackware. I am releasing it also as Shareware. It is free for non-comercial use and you may distribute it to anyone. But if you find it useful this poor graduate student could use a little cash to help with his large monthly computer loan payments. (I am a certified Mac-aholic.) If you send me $5 and a disk I will send you the latest improvements to Q&A (import text from the file is in the works) and my latest HyperCard creations. One of these annimates the orbits of binary stars and another shows a movie of the "HR" diagram. Many more projects are planned.
