FKEYpad 1.0
-----------
FKEYpad is an INIT resource that turns the digits (0 -> 9) on your
numeric keypad into function keys (FKEY's). You are probably already
familiar with FKEY's. They are invoked by typing cmd-shift-<number>.
Apple implemented 4 of them in their system -
cmd-shift-1 - eject internal disk
cmd-shift-2 - eject external disk
cmd-shift-3 - save screen to disk
cmd-shift-4 - print screen
Many other public domain FKEY's exist along with Dreams of the Phoenix,
Inc* FKEY installer. I like function keys, but they are hard to invoke (it
sometimes takes two hands). So I created FKEYpad. It maps the numeric
keypad into the function keys. You can know just push the 1 key (on the
keypad only) to eject the disk or the 4 key to print the screen and so on.
INSTALLATION
To install FKEYpad on an HFS system (Finder 5.2), simply copy the file
to the System Folder. That's it! The next time you boot up, FKEYpad will
be installed. The file is only 1.5K in size.
To install FKEYpad on an MFS system (Finder 4.1), you must use ResEdit.
Simply copy the INIT 31 resource (called FKEYpad 1.0) and paste it into
the System file. The next time you boot up, FKEYpad will be installed.
BUGS, ETC.
The only bug that I know of is with Desk Accessories (DA's). On the new
(128K HFS) ROMs, the key pressed will also show up in DA's that process
key strokes. This is due to the way that the ROM routines work. If alot
of users would like to see that fixed, I may create a new version.
In addition, FKEYpad has only been tested on a 512K Mac with the Mac +
(128K HFS) ROMS and an external keypad. I would be interested in any
problems with other system configurations. It works real nice with Lofty
Becker's Date Key. You only push a single key and the date is typed into
your document.
