  13. User-Visible Problems Corrected - Part 1
  14.  
  15. The following user-visible problems were discovered in Apple's
  16. Macintosh system software released between September 1985 and June
  17. 1986.  The system software released in June 1986 corrects most of
  18. these problems.  If you have noticed problems with your software that
  19. you can reproduce with the new software, please use the Apple
  20. Software Bug Report form to report the problem to Apple Computer,
  21. Inc.

  25. 32 character name in Namer
  26. Fixed in The Namer version 1.1
  27. The Namer can't deal with 32-character names, and it assumes that since it
  28. can't enter them, it'll never encounter them.  Unfortunately, a test program
  29. at the Factory leaves a 32-character name in the LaserWriter's EEROM.
  30. This results in you being unable to rename the LaserWriter.

  33. Applications crash after a short time
  34. Fixed in System version 3.2
  35. The Locked bit is set on PACK 6 (International Utilities), causing
  36. fragmentation in applications.  Many applications crash with unrecoverable
  37. memory errors after a little while.

  40. Better/Faster in ImageWriter (not a bug)
  41. Picture quality is darker for Faster quality than for Best quality.  This is a
  42. feature, not a bug.  Listed here just for the record.

  45. Bitmap garbage on LaserWriter
  46. Fixed in LaserWriter version 3.1
  47. Small pictures pasted from MacPaint into another application (such as MacDraw)
  48. occasionally print with extraneous dots and lines around them.

  51. Calculator arrangement doesn't match keypad
  52. Fixed in System version 3.2
  53. For historical reasons, the Calculator desk accessory's key layout does not
  54. match the numeric keypad on Macintosh Plus, Macintosh XL, or the optional
  55. numeric keypad on Macintosh.

  58. Chooser and Locked Disk
  59. Fixed in System version 3.2
  60. The Chooser, when checking to make sure the system disk is unlocked, checks
  61. the default volume instead of the system volume.  This makes the Chooser
  62. sometimes display the wrong message, and sometimes fail to set the
  63. printer.

  66. Chooser doesn't remember Imagewriter port
  67. Fixed in System version 3.2
  68. After restarting the system, the Chooser will forget which port the
  69. ImageWriter is connected to.

  74. Printing a color picture on an ImageWriter II will not work unless the color
  75. black appears in the picture somewhere.

  80. Colors are printed in an order that tends to get the printer ribbon dirty,
  81. smearing other colors.  The print order has been changed: now black is
  82. printed last, so no black ink gets on the yellow ribbon.

  85. Control Panel Dialog Box Too Small

  87. The text that warns you that the AppleTalk setting cannot be changed is too
  88. small to fit inside its dialog box.

  93. The Font/DA Mover was not able to open any system file unless it was actually
  94. named "System".  This restriction has been removed.

  97. Copying Folders from the Desktop
  98. Fixed in Finder version 5.1
  99. Dragging a full folder from an HFS volume onto the desktop, then onto an MFS
  100. volume, will act like it's copying the folder and its contents to the MFS
  101. volume.  In fact, the folder gets copied, but the files do not.

  104. Document appearance changes--text moves around (not a bug)
  105. The Times, Helvetica, and Courier fonts have been altered slightly from the
  106. original LaserWriter fonts to improve spacing on the LaserWriter when used
  107. from a Macintosh Plus.  This may affect text layout in existing
  108. documents.  There is no workaround and no fix is expected.

  111. Dragging an empty folder to trash, then duplicate:  crashes Finder
  112. Fixed in Finder version 5.3
  113. Drag an empty folder to the Trash, then select another file and duplicate it:
  114. this will crash the system.

  117. Dragging on Locked Disks in the Finder

  119. The Finder will not report a disk locked error when you drag a file from a
  120. folder onto the disk icon of the same disk if the disk is locked.  Now the
  121. error message is given (even if it isn't very clear).

  124. Dragging out of trash loses file
  125. Fixed in Finder version 5.3
  126. Dragging a file out of the trash can onto a different volume removes the file,
  127. permanently, from both the trash can and the destination volume.

  132. Duplicating a file in the trash can causes a system error.

  137. A bug in the Resource Manager caused programs that wrote small resources to
  138. resource files (to name two:  Font/DA Mover and Aldus PageMaker) occasionally
  139. destroyed the files, usually unrecoverably.

  142. Finder comments not copied on installation
  143. Fixed in Installer version 2.2
  144. When the Installer copies a file, it does not copy the file's Finder comment
  145. (in the Get Info box) under all circumstances (HFS to MFS, etc.)--and if the
  146. comment contains the former version number, the Finder's Get Info box will
  147. tell
  148. you the previous version number of an updated file.

  151. Folder Size Reporting
  152. Fixed in Finder version 5.1
  153. The sizes reported for folders under the title bars of their open windows in
  154. the Finder does not accurately reflect the amount of space taken up by all
  155. files in all folders in that folder.  Usually it represents the sum of the
  156. sizes of all files in that folder, excluding the contents of folders in it.

  159. Font/DA Mover Changes Modification Date of Unmodified Files
  160. Fixed in Font/DA Mover version 3.2
  161. The Font/DA Mover updated the modification date of every file it opened, even
  162. if the file wasn't actually modified.

  165. Font/DA Mover Crashes on Nearly-Full Disk

  167. On a nearly-full disk, the Font/DA Mover would crash if it tried to copy fonts

  171. Font/DA Mover:  Double-clicking "Open" button opened New file

  173. Double-clicking on the "Open" button occasionally had the result of
  174. clicking on "New"; that is, asking for the name of a new file rather

  180. On occasion, inserting a disk while running the Font/DA Mover would

  185. Fonts Inaccessible in MacDraw

  187. On a Macintosh Plus with System file 3.0 or later, the Font menu in
  188. MacDraw is alphabetically ordered and does not scroll.  If you have
  189. more than 11 fonts (on a 9-inch Macintosh screen; more on a Macintosh
  190. XL), this makes the bottom ones uninvokable.  There is a workaround
  191. posted on AppleLink.

  200. Formatting Blank Disks in Font/DA Mover
  201. Fixed in Font/DA Mover version 3.2
  202. Font/DA Mover doesn't bring up the Disk Initialization package when a blank
  203. disk is inserted.  Thus the newly-inserted blank disk never gets initialized
  204. or mounted.

  207. ImageWriter driver does not recognize ImageWriter II
  208. Fixed in ImageWriter version 2.3
  209. The ImageWriter driver forgot how to recognize an ImageWriter II, and would
  210. assume it had different paper handling and no color, or give the message "The
  211. printer is not responding".

  214. ImageWriter stops printing

  216. Large MacPaint pictures occurring many times on one page (for example, copying
  217. a large Paint image and pasting it many times into Draw) would cause the
  218. ImageWriter to stop printing and the system to hang.

  221. Initializing Disks on MacWorks

  223. Initializing a blank disk on MacWorks on a Macintosh XL causes a system error
  224. under System file 3.0.

  229. The LaserWriter and Laser Prep files, when installed from the Printer
  230. Installation 2.0 disk, have generic document icons instead of their own.
  231. Problem:  The Finder doesn't rebuild bundles if the Init bit is set but the
  232. file previously existed, even if the type has changed.  Workaround:  rebuild
  233. the desktop after an Install.

  236. Installer deletes incorrect resources (loses Alarm Clock pictures)

  238. When doing an Install, the Installer occasionally deletes valid resources that
  239. it believes to be incorrect.  This most often manifests itself in the Alarm
  240. Clock showing up after an Install with only digits, no pictures.

  251. When the LaserWriter driver encounters a change in style, then a change back,
  252. in a downloaded font (or a Macintosh bitmap font), it re-downloads the
  253. original style.  This fills up the LaserWriter's virtual memory very
  254. quickly, and the LaserWriter resets in the middle of the job.

  258. LaserWriter Plus loses optional characters

  260. If a user does not have all of the LaserWriter Plus fonts installed in the

  262. print wrong (such as a yen sign instead of a bullet) or not print at all on
  263. the LaserWriter Plus.

  266. LaserWriter underlining (not a bug)
  267. The underline character in a font and the font underlining of that font do not
  268. necessarily coincide, so underlined underlines don't always appear as you
  269. think they should.

  274. In large, long, slanted fonts (like large sizes of Zapf Chancery, for
  275. instance), the lower part of some letters is omitted on the screen.

  280. On a Macintosh Plus, on occasion MacTerminal would disconnect itself from a
  281. modem.  This has been fixed.

  286. Opening a MacWrite document often results in the document coming up as
  287. "Untitled"; you cannot use Save or Save As to save it.

  292. Pictures from previous editing sessions were occasionally pasted from the
  293. Scrapbook during editing.

  296. One Bit Shift in Dialog Text

  298. Occasionally text in an text box shifts up one bit when text is added or
  299. another box is selected.

  302. Overprinting of MacPaint documents

  304. Printing multiple MacPaint documents causes the second one to have remnants of
  305. the first, the third to have remnants of the first and second, etc.

  310. Pictures cut from MacDraw and pasted into other applications occasionally
  311. don't print on the LaserWriter.  This has been fixed by the new
  312. LaserWriter driver.

  315. Phantom fonts in Font menus
  316. Font/DA Movers prior to 3.0 did not know about new font information added in
  317. System File 3.0 and later.  If you use an old Font/DA Mover to remove fonts in
  318. a new System file, the new information sticks around, and thus the font names
  319. stay in the menu even though the fonts are not present.

  322. Problems with Clipboard in Paint and Draw
  323. NOT FIXED
  324. Due to some problems with MacPaint and MacDraw, cutting and pasting may not
  325. work unless the application is on the same disk (and probably in the same
  326. folder on that disk) as the System and Finder.

  329. Reboot on launch of F/DA Mover or Installer
  330. Fixed in System version 3.2
  331. Under certain system conditions (often seen on non-English language Macintosh
  332. Plus System Tools disks), the Installer and Font/DA Mover would crash or
  333. reboot the macine immediately upon opening.

  336. Screen dumps with mouse down act differently

  338. On Macintosh Plus ROMs, the Command-Shift-1 through Command-Shift-4 actions
  339. are queued, rather than executed immediately.  This means that pending
  340. actions (such as releasing the mouse button) take place before the
  341. FKEY action (such as taking a screen shot) is executed.  It is no
  342. longer possible, then, to take a screen shot of a menu, for instance.

  345. SCSI multi-block blind reads and writes
  346. Fixed in System version 3.2
  347. A timing problem prevented multi-block blind reads and writes from working
  348. correctly, thus seriously reducing the maximum performance possible on SCSI.
  349. An INIT file called "SCSI Helper" or "SCSI Items" patched these problems; the
  350. code in this file was rolled into System 3.2.

  353. Sheet feeded, color ribbon not recognized on Imagewriter II
  354. Fixed in InageWriter version 2.2
  355. On a Mac with 64K ROMS and an ImageWriter II with Rev 3 ROMs, the Imagewriter
  356. driver could not recognize the sheet feeder or color ribbon.

  359. System 3.1.1 incompatible with scripts

  361. The Creation Date of the System File 3.1.1 is incompatable with the Mac Plus

  368. After using and closing the Chooser, it would improperly clean up after
  369. itself, sometimes causing the System file to grow to very large sizes.

  374. Using Underlined Italics on some fonts sometimes resulted in only underlining,
