  10.      METZ FreeMem is a Windows 3.0 utility which will display and
  11. monitor the percentage of free system resources and the amount of
  12. free memory available.  With FreeMem you can monitor your Windows
  13. memory usage and avoid "Out of memory" messages.

  15.                      Version 4.2 Update Notes
  16.      Memory used for system resources often gets fragmented or
  17. broken up into many chunks consisting of occupied space and free
  18. space used for resources.  It was possible that FreeMem 4.1 was
  19. inaccurate if the resource space was heavily fragmented.  This
  20. version should be very accurate, especially after a long Windows
  21. session involving many applications.
  22.      Freemem now displays the percentages of User and Graphics
  23. Device Interface resources free in the configuration dialog.
  24. Double click on FreeMem or press F1 after switching to FreeMem
  25. to access the configuration dialog.

  29.                  Memory, Resources, Windows, and You
  30.  
  31.      Memory under Windows is comprised of real and virtual memory.
  32. Real memory is comprised of the base memory up to 640K (655,360 bytes).
  33. Virtual memory is a combination of extended memory and the memory
  34. which is swapped to disk by Windows.  You can increase virtual memory
  35. by increasing the amount of extended memory you have and/or by
  36. increasing the size of your Windows swapfile.  (See your Windows
  37. users guide for more information on the swapfile.)  Since memory
  38. prices have dropped so much recently, it is advisable to install
  39. at least 4K of memory on your system, more is better.  FreeMem
  40. displays the amount of free memory on the right portion of its window.
  41.     Besides memory, applications also use system resources.  Windows
  42. has a limitation on the amount of system resources available, and
  43. this limitation generally causes the "Out of memory" error when several
  44. applications are loaded and the system resource usage limit has been
  45. reached.  Since the amount of memory available for system resources
  46. is limited, you will usually run out of system resources before running
  47. out of memory.  FreeMem displays the percentage of free system resources
  48. on the left portion of its window.  The memory available for system
  49. resources consist of two 64K pools, one for the User Interface, the
  50. other for the Graphics Device Interface, for a total of 128K memory.
  51.     We have a growing concern about the number of Windows applications
  52. which are using extraordinary amounts of resources and memory.  As users
  53. and developers we need to police application resource and memory usage
  54. to prevent further "Out of memory" messages.  Remember when 640K was
  55. supposed to be plenty of memory?  If we're not careful, 4096K won't
  56. be enough before long!
  57.     You can determine application resource and memory usage using
  58. METZ FreeMem as follows:
  59.     1.  Configure FreeMem to Check Memory every 1 second.
  60.     2.  Configure FreeMem to Compact Memory every 1 second.
  61.     3.  Close any unnecessary applications.
  62.     4.  Note the percentage of resources and amount of memory free
  63.         displayed by FreeMem.
  64.     5.  Run the application to be tested.
  65.     6.  Note the change in resources and free memory.
  66.     7.  Close the application.
  67.     8.  Check to see if the resource and free memory amount returned
  68.         to the level of that noted in Step 4.
  69.    Using the above procedure you can determine several things about
  70. the application in question.  First of all, the amounts displayed in
  71. Step 8 should match those of Step 4.  If not, the application is not
  72. cleaning up used memory like it should.  Second, if the application
  73. uses an extraordinary amount of resources and/or memory noted in
  74. Step 6, it better have a good reason!
  75.    We ran a simple test comparing different applications and observed
  76. the following:

  86.    These values will vary from system to system depending on their
  87. configuration, but well behaved applications are essential for optimal
  88. use of your system and software, so don't hesitate to question your
  89. developers about unusual resource and/or memory usage!
  90.    The percentage of system resources free displayed by FreeMem
  91. may vary slightly from that of the Program Manager.  Our calculation
  92. is more precise because it takes into account even the smallest
  93. blocks of free memory available for system resources.

  95.    For normal use under Windows, set your FreeMem options as follows:
  96.     1.  Configure FreeMem to Check Memory every 3 to 5 seconds.
  97.     2.  Disable the Compact Memory option.

  101.                        Configuration options

  103. Check memory every ## seconds:
  104.    FreeMem will calculate the amount of memory available every ##
  105.    seconds.
  106.  
  107. Compact memory every ## seconds:
  108.    FreeMem will tell Windows to compact memory every ## seconds.
  109.    This is useful when you wish to see how much memory a particular
  110.    application requires.  Check the amount of memory displayed before
  111.    and after an application is run to see how much memory it consumes.
  112.    When Windows compacts memory, is frees up blocks of memory no longer
  113.    being used by an application.  These blocks are kept in memory for
  114.    performance reasons, so the Compact option may decrease your
  115.    system performance.  Some users have reported better system
  116.    performance with the Compact option enabled.

  118. Invert Window:
  119.    Choose Invert Window to display white text on a black background.
  120.    This looks good with screen savers or a black desktop background.

  122. Stay in front:
  123.    Select this option if you want FreeMem to always be visible and in
  124.    front of any other application.

  129.                           Application notes
  130.  
  131. - If EMS is detected the amount free is displayed along with
  132.   conventional memory free.  A plus sign separates conventional from
  133.   expanded, with expanded on the right.  Note, Windows does not
  134.   recognize expanded memory in Enhanced mode, so this value will never
  135.   be displayed.
  136. - FreeMem will keep itself on top of other windows so that it is always
  137.   visible.  (Unless the Stay in front option is deselected.)
  138. - With the left mouse button, click and drag FreeMem to move it to the
  139.   desired location on your screen.  This position will be stored
  140.   in the current FREEMEM.INI for subsequent startups. (The default startup
  141.   position is the upper left corner of your screen.)
  142. - Add FreeMem to the LOAD or RUN line of your WIN.INI.
  143. - As a Windows applications developer I have found FreeMem to be a
  144.   useful tool for detecting memory managment problems within applications.
  145.   Since FREEMEM remains visible, tracking memory usage is simplified.
  146. - As a Windows user, I am concerned about the amount of memory that some
  147.   applications use under Windows.  Now that Windows 3.0 has opened
  148.   up the amount of memory available, it seems that some applications
  149.   are taking free reign with their memory usage.  So, guess what?  It
  150.   won't be long before 4 meg won't be enough memory!  A reasonable amount
  151.   of memory for an average application to use is 10-30K.

  155. -Non-mouse windows users can interact with FreeMem.
  156.    When FreeMem has the input focus the following function keys work:
  157.    (Alt+Tab to shift focus between windows, since FreeMem has no caption
  158.     bar it is difficult to tell if it does have the focus, see the
  159.     Microsoft Windows Users Guide for more info.)

  161.    F1     - displays the about box, which contains configuration options.
  162.    ALT+F7 - allows you to move FreeMem with the keyboard arrow keys, press
  163.             enter when done.
  164.    ALT+F4 - closes FreeMem.
  165.  
  166. Mouse users:
  167.    FreeMem can be moved with a click and drag motion.
  168.    The right mouse button clicked on FreeMem will close it.
  169.    A double click on the FreeMem window will display the About box containing
  170.       configuration options.
