Overview
METZ Windows Lock is a security application for Microsoft Windows.
With Lock running, you can prevent unauthorized use of your system
yet allow applications to continue to run in the background.
Lock can be configured so that your system cannot be rebooted from
the keyboard. While Lock prevents user input it does allow other
applications to continue execution.
METZ Lock now supports Novell Netware passwords. This eliminates
the need for dual passwords for Lock and Netware. Lock also provides
additional support allowing you to change your Novell password. The
Novell support is performed automatically, and can easily be disabled
by the user.
Should you desire additional security and password protection at
the DOS system level, please consider the Harcom ACS product mentioned
below.
Lock appears on your screen as an icon in the form of a key and a
keyhole. Lock can be activated by double clicking on the icon or
selecting 'Lock' from it's system menu. Lock is password driven and
will not secure your system until a password has been entered and
confirmed. Once a password is established, Lock will continue to use
that password until you change it. The password is case sensitive.
Accept no imitations, even though LOCK.EXE is about 65K bytes,
it uses very little memory while running and is very unobtrusive.
Also, with METZTSR installed, you can type in a DOS Window without
interruption.
All Lock menu commands appear on it's system menu.
Lock has the following command line options which can be used
individually or together:
/H or /h - Hide the METZ Lock icon.
/L or /l - Automatically lock or blank the system when run.

COMPANY-WIDE SECURITY IS NOW PRACTICAL
FOR COMPANIES WITH THOUSANDS OF PC'S.
New York, N.Y., June 27, 1990: A new professional PC software
security system, now makes company wide security practical even when
there are thousands of PCs to secure. Called PC-Watchman ACS (Access
Control Software), it is the software version of the PC-Watchman ST
board level product. It sells for only $59 with discounts for high
volume customers.
ACS was developed to satisfy the PC security needs of one of America's
10 largest corporations for an economical, across-the-board
implementation involving thousands of PC's in use world-wide by
operators with minimal PC experience.
"While there are other PC security products on the market, none has
met the low cost and professional standards required for company-wide
installations", said Charles McClung, President of Harcom Security
Products. "In addition, ACS is compatible with all versions of
Microsoft Windows, including the recently introduced version 3.0".
Another unique and highly desirable advantage of ACS is its immunity
to commercially available disk utility programs which can easily undo
other software security products. ACS provides User Access and
Timeout controls plus absolute control of the computer startup
process. ACS also provides a record of security violations. Because
users often forget their passwords, ACS provides a user define dialog
as an alternative user identification procedure.
ACS meets the heretofore unattainable objective for "no administrative
support required" which is essential for a large scale
implementation. ACS can be installed, literally in seconds, by the
least sophisticated PC user.
In summary, ACS overcomes the three problems that have prevented large
scale implementation of security systems on PC's:
1. High cost for implementation on thousands of units
2. Vulnerability to being bypassed by moderately skilled users
3. Complexity of installation and adminstration
The manufacturer points out that ACS is compatible with an upgrade to
its more comprehensive security products which are appropriate in
situations requiring the highest degree of security.

---------------------PRESS RELEASE--------------------------
------------------ METZ Lock version history --------------------
Version 3.1
* Novell Netware passwords are now automatically supported. Lock will
detect the presence of Novell Netware and automatically use your
Novell password. Novell users have the option of disabling Netware
support.
* After unlocking, Lock no longer activates applications that were
iconic when the system becomes locked.
* The Screen Saver inadvertently asked for a password when some keys
were pressed. This has been fixed.
* The About box now correctly prints the METZ Software order form.
* Minor problems with the METZTSR have been fixed.
Version 3.0
* This version is a true Windows 3.0 application.
* Lock supports Windows 3.0 bitmaps. You can use Microsoft
Paintbrush to create bitmaps for Lock to display while the
screen is blanked.
* Advanced configuration options have been added which include
global hotkeys, hide lock icon, and lock system at a specific time.
The lock at specific time can be entered in a 24 hour format, but
Lock will convert it to a 12 hour format.
* Lock now has online help.
Version 1.52
* The Screen Saver Only mode was not working as intended. Problems
with it have been fixed.
* The mouse sensitivity has been reduced. Minor vibrations, or
bumping the desk your mouse was on could trigger the password box
or screen saver timeout.
Version 1.51
* Lock now blanks the screen by default. This can be easily
changed on the configuration dialog.
* Ctrl-Alt-Del can now be prevented under DOS and Windows.
Please make sure that you have read the METZTSR.TXT file and
installed the METZTSR.COM program.
The configuration screen has been modified to reflect this
new feature. Ctrl-Alt-Del suppression is supported under
all Windows 3.0 modes (Real, Standard, and Enhanced).
METZ Lock MUST be running in order to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del
under Windows. The METZTSR.COM will allow you to prevent
rebooting from DOS.
* To prevent unauthorized modification of your configuration,
the password is required before accessing the configuration
dialog.
* This version is compatible with Almanac version 1.04 and greater.
Please contact Impact Software for information regarding an
Almanac update.
Version 1.41
* Lock only allows you to run one copy at a time, but now it will
automatically lock the system if you try to run Lock a second
time and the lock option is turned on (either in the WIN.INI or
as the /l option in the command line).
* A bug affecting the printing of order forms from the About box
has been fixed.
Version 1.4
* Lock can now be configured as a Screen Saver only. If you wish
to have Lock act as a screen saver without the password protection
feature, select "Screen Saver only mode" in the configuration
dialog. Screen blanking will be automatically turned on as well.
* This version has an implementation which will prevent timeouts
while you are working in a DOS application under Windows. In the
past, this application would timeout even if you were actively
typing away within a DOS Window. Now the timeout will occur
only after you are inactive in any DOS Window as well.
Please read METZTSR.TXT and install the METZTSR.COM application
if you wish to prevent timeouts while you are working in a
DOS Window. METZTSR has been tested on several different
platforms and we have not experienced any incompatibilities.
* You can now double click on the icon with either mouse button
to activate lock.
* When the Screen Blanking feature was turned off, the lock dialog
would always remain visible, and interfere with other screen
blankers. The lock dialog will now disappear after 20 seconds,
and reappear whenever a key is pressed or the mouse is moved.
Version 1.3
* The LOCK and HIDE command line options can now be configured in the
Lock section of your WIN.INI file.
[METZ Lock] - METZ Lock WIN.INI section header
hide=Y - will cause lock to be hidden
lock=Y - will cause immediate locking of system
* Lock will now always keep itself in the foreground, even if an
application invokes a dialog box while running in the background.
* Additional changes were made to insure that any keyboard or mouse
activity will immediately activate the logon screen.
* Lock is now capable of displaying a bitmap randomly
on the blank screen. Enter the bitmap filename on the Configuration
dialog.
Version 1.2
* Lock has a new icon.
Version 1.16
* Lock can now be hidden while in use with a command line parameter
of /h or /H. (i.e. WIN LOCK /H) Once you have configured Lock,
use this option to hide the Lock icon from view. You will need
to configure the inactivity option in order for Lock to be effective
when hidden.
* Lock now positions all dialog boxes in the middle of your screen.
Version 1.15
* The Lock configuration options were not properly saved. This has
been corrected.
Version 1.14
* Lock now provides you with the option to blank the screen while your
system is locked. Select Blank screen from the Configure dialog.
* Lock now automatically centers the password dialog boxes on your
screen.
* Lock now will issue a beep when an invalid password is entered.
Version 1.13
* Lock can now be automatically invoked from the command line with
a parameter of /l or /L. Use this parameter with your favorite
Windows menuing application (like METZ Desktop Manager) so that
your system will be locked when Lock is selected. Or, from the
DOS prompt type "WIN LOCK /L".
Version 1.12
* Lock now sets the Focus back to the application that was active
when the system was locked.
Version 1.11
* The auto lock feature was not correctly initialized, and thus Lock
timed out incorrectly. This has been fixed.
Version 1.1
* You can now double click on the Lock Icon with either the left or
right mouse button to lock your system.
* A Configure menu item has been added to the system menu of Lock.
Lock can now be automatically activated after 1 to 60 minutes of
inactivity. (Inactivity being no mouse movement or keyboard input.)
Use of this function requires that the included library METZ.DLL
be somewhere in your environment path.
The 'Trap mouse' option will confine the mouse to the Lock dialog box
when your system is locked.
