This software application is a tool that provides data communications network
design, capacity planning, expansion insight, and aid in the actual con-
struction or expansion of a network. Typical questions this application might
answer include: How many nodes can a network support? What tools, parts,
components, and software will be required to construct this network? Why might
an existing network perform so badly? Other "What ifs" can be explored too.
This might encompass node counts, wiring type, and support requirements.
This documentation and registration form states the terms for the use of this
software. Note, this shareware sample is provided under the terms of a 30 day
trial basis. LANBuild is a copyright of SST, NPI, and the author. SST and NPI
retains all rights to this software under the copyright laws of the United
States of America.
This sample is provided on a trial basis; feel free to distribute this
software so long as this is accomplished without any fee to the recipient
other than media and delivery costs. If you find that this software is useful,
please register the product. In return, you will receive notices of upgrades
and bug fixes and one update when available. You will also receive notifica-
tion of new versions.
Definition of Shareware
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details--some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period (No limitation
with LANBuild). With registration, you get anything from the simple right to
continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. The main difference is in
the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk
vendor may copy their shareware. (LANBuild requires written permission.)
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the product,
you don't pay for it.
Disclaimer--User Agreement
Users of LANBuild must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "LANBuild is
supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied,
including, without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of
fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct
or consequential, which may result from the use of the tools."
LANBuild is a "shareware program." It is provided for evaluation. Please do
not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-
supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using LANBuild, please register.
The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any
one time. You must treat this software just like the book. An example is
that this software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved
from one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of
it being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time or legally photocopied
for distribution, LANBuild is not to be copied (other than for personal backup
or distribution on a trial basis).
LANBuild cannot be distributed for any kind of remuneration. You are
encouraged to pass a copy of LANBuild along to your friends for evaluation.
Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that they use it.
All registering users will receive a copy of the latest version of LANBuild.
Complete commercial versions of this product will soon be available.
Functionality planned at this time include retention of data by network time,
network name, and date. Confidence intervals for statistical analysis of peak
loading, channel saturation, an deferrals should be available by the time you
receive this. Some functionality and enhancements will be added as users
request features and fixes to the product.
Additionally, it is expected that dynamic data exchange (DDE) with MS Excel
spreadsheets and other MS Windows products support the DDE interchange; DDE
will simplify data entry and minimize data collection errors within LANBuild.
Additionally, other planned features include Pen Windows support. These
represent important features for network managers who need to know at the
planning stages--before spending money, changing network configurations, and
altering network access for users. Frequently, a manager needs to know what
effect a distributed client-server database, more network clients, or an
increased network workload will have for a network or for each individual
subnetworks.
Since this is a statistical tool, results range from total accuracy to
approximation to total error. Also, the results depend greatly upon the
accuracy of the input data. Some protocol analyzers are notoriously inaccurate
or too slow to capture and process all packets. The data might be misread too.
Therefore, this software is provided "as is" without any guarantees regarding
the utility, accuracy, or suitability to the task. You, the user, assumes
responsibilities resulting from misuse or misapplication. There are no
warrantees either expressed or implied. No agent shall create any.
Installation
This software product runs within the MS Windows 3.0 and 3.1 environment.
There should be no conflicts with special memory drivers such as QEMM, MS-DOS
5.0 high memory, HIMEM, and SMARTDRV. The simple installation method is to run
SETUP from the MS Windows File/Run option under the Program Manager Window.
The setup process will create a subdirectory, a group window and install icons.
Removal
The Removal icon provides a complete method to remove all portions of LANBuild
from the hard disk or network drives. If the LANBuild icon group persists
merely highlight that group within the program manager and delete it.
Operation
To use the model, activate the LANBuild icon (a stopwatch from the pulldown
menu of the LANBuild window. Select the desired configuration from the
pull-down menu. After specifying key architectur
