Wordlok Version 1.1b
Copyright 1991 Virtual Solutions, Inc.

General Information:
WordLok is a shareware program that makes crossword puzzles from its internal
list of 1750 words between 2 & 8 letters long. The black squares are first
placed into a blank grid using the screen editor. Words are then fit in the
puzzle by issuing the Solve Section command from the main menu. This version
has been modified to support our promotional contest series in which $1,000
CASH Prizes are awarded! They are skill contests that have three separate
crossword puzzles to be completed from word lists with set point values. The
player with the highest total score wins! For information about the next one,
just write to us at:

Program Features:
Puzzles may have up to 10 rows and 38 columns with a total of 255 words
between 2 & 8 letters long. The internal word list has point values used to
score the puzzle solutions. Words are fit automatically into the puzzles by
trying as many combinations as possible during a user set time limit. The
best solution found is tracked & placed into the grid. Puzzles may be split
into sections to be solved separately. To receive an enhanced version that
builds puzzles up to 21 rows deep and supports custom word lists, send $15 to:

Solution Strategy:
The best strategy is to divide puzzles into sections using careful placement
of black squares. Since blacks have zero point value, use as few as possible
and place them so that words are formed in stair step fashion.
<Tab> selects a section for Solving or Clearing when the cursor is anywhere
within its bordering black squares.

and editing functions.
Using Help
This program has an on-line help system that may be called up by pressing
the <F1> key at any point that help info is desired. The info displayed
is based on the currently highlighted command or present operation. For
overall info or solution strategy, use the Help command of the main menu.

File Commands
Create New Puzzle Command
Creates a new puzzle in memory. The present one is cleared unless it has not
been saved. You will be asked if you want to save it before continuing. You
may then create the new puzzle by copying from an existing TEMPLATE or by
forming a brand new one. All new puzzles are given the name UNTITLED when
created. Assign them a name when they are saved to disk with the Save Puzzle
or Save As New Puzzle commands.
Load Old Puzzle Command
Loads a puzzle on disk into memory. The present one is cleared unless it has
not been saved. You will be asked if you want to save it before continuing.
Choose the puzzle to load from the list of the ones available on the present
working disk or directory. Insert a different diskette before issuing this
command if the desired puzzles aren't found. You must change directories from
outside the program for a hard disk drive.
Save Puzzle Command
Copies the present puzzle to the working disk drive. You should periodically
use this command to save your work. If the present puzzle has not been named,
you will be asked for a name before it is saved. Otherwise, the old puzzle
solution will be updated with the present puzzle solution.
Save As New Puzzle Command
Copies the present puzzle to a new puzzle with a different name. It keeps the
latest saved version of the present one under its original name. You then
continue work on the new puzzle just created. This lets you try variations of
the present puzzle without losing the original version.
Revert to Saved Version Command
Reloads the previously saved version of the present puzzle. The old version
will be read back in & you may continue. This command lets you discard an
unwanted variation of the present puzzle that has not yet been saved to disk.
Exit Program Command
Choose this command when you are done working and wish to exit out of the
WordLok program. A dialog box appears if you have changed the present puzzle
since you last saved it (or have not yet saved a new one).
Edit Commands
Clear Selected Section Command
Erases the selected section's letters but retains the black spaces. You are
asked to verify before continuing. A section is selected by pressing the <Tab>
key when the cursor is anywhere inside the section.
View Internal Word List Command
Shows the internal word list along with their numerical scores. Navigation
key commands are shown on the screen. Only words from this list may be used
in the skill contest.
Solve Commands
Solve Selected Section Command
Fills words into the highlighted puzzle section. New words are continually
fit into the section until the time limit set by the user is reached.
The highest scoring solution is tracked and displayed on screen.
Set Solve Time Limit Command
Sets the amount of time to spend trying new word combos for the Solve command.
Generally, more time should be allowed in proportion to the section size. It
is left up to you to manage the time limit as you see fit.
Info Command
Show Row & Col Scores Command
Displays the numerical scores of each row and column of the present puzzle
solution. Each blacked out square has no point value, so use as few as
possible while still able to obtain a good solution.
We hope you enjoy the program and wish to hear from you!
