  8.  AB    Advances in surgery and the extension of the surgical indications have
  9.        amplified the problems due to hemorrhage, main side effect, and its
  10.        treatment, which in the past consisted primarily in whole blood
  11.        transfusion. Such practice, however, involves the surgeon in a series of
  12.        problems due to shortage of blood donors, religious beliefs and most of
  13.        all the risks related to the transfusion practice itself. Apart from
  14.        early and late reactions, the risk of transmission of infective
  15.        diseases, post-transfusional immunodepression and legal problems must be
  16.        pointed out. Recently, to solve these problems, the indications to blood
  17.        transfusion have been restricted to severe hypovolemic shock and severe
  18.        untreatable hypoxia; the separate use of blood components has been
  19.        privileged; and autologous blood transfusion techniques like pre-deposit
  20.        for donation, normovolemic preoperative hemodilution and intraoperative
  21.        autologous transfusions have been used. It's mandatory that the surgeon
  22.        keeps in date with the Transfusional Medicine progresses working in
  23.        strict collaboration with the Transfusional Services to best protect the
  24.        good health of the patients he has in care.
