  9.        immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is actually a global pandemic,
  10.        and one of human immunodeficiency virus infection, not just the terminal
  11.        stage of that infection known as AIDS. The article identifies how a
  12.        holistic perspective on the epidemic itself, on persons in the
  13.        community, and on nursing practice can assist the profession in
  14.        developing an effective response. Issues of care for those infected and
  15.        prevention of additional cases are discussed.
