AB The worldwide event commonly referred to as the acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is actually a global pandemic,
and one of human immunodeficiency virus infection, not just the terminal
stage of that infection known as AIDS. The article identifies how a
holistic perspective on the epidemic itself, on persons in the
community, and on nursing practice can assist the profession in
developing an effective response. Issues of care for those infected and
prevention of additional cases are discussed.
