So you think that you are ready to retire now, eh? Before you get carried away
with the idea of an early retirement, there are a few questions which you might
ask yourself. Actually, a few more than a few. After twenty years of
retirement consulting, I have found that most people are no more prepared for
early retirement than the slaves of the Old South were prepared for early
freedom.
Slavery exists only as a state of mind. You may relish that regular paycheck;
I consider it to be somewhere between prostitution and slavery. Remember, it
is much more efficient to enslave a man with a lie than with a whip.
I really didn't write these questions as a private opinion poll, but if I
receive enuf answers to make a valid compilation, I'll send a copy to all
contributors. You might even have some questions of your own.
If you don't have any questions for me, then I have some questions for you!
1. Are you working full time just to buy the convenience food, the fancy
clothes, the dependable car, and the house in the high rent district? Not to
mention taxes and your shrink.
2. Would you rather work 48 weeks and take a 4 week vacation, or work 4 weeks
and take a 48 week vacation?
3. What would you do with a 48 week vacation?

better?

A mandate?
6. Do you worship money? Do you trust it?
7. Would you mind living a mile from a publicly maintained road? 5 miles from
a pack of cigarettes? 20 miles from a medical doctor, shopping center, high
school, and a McDonald's? 30 miles from a community college? 40 miles from a
beer? 50 miles from the bus stop? 100 miles from a concert hall and
University?
8. Would you mind being flood bound? For a week? Snowbound? For a month?
9. How long can you work without supervision?
10. Do you prefer your own judgement and abilities, or those of an expert?
11. Are you prepared for all sorts of wild animals wanting a piece of your
body, from chiggers, ticks and noseeums to bears, mountain lions and yahoos?
12. Are you immunized against spotted fever? Histoplasmosis? Rabies?
Culture shock?
13. Do you believe in magic? Luck? Miracles? Serendipity? Curiosity?
Contradiction?
14. Would you trust someone with a noose around his neck? Wearing a false
face?
15. Do you consume meat? Coffee? White bread? Tobacco? Alcohol?
Marijuana? Etc?
16. Can you live without a flush toilet? TV? TV dinner? Central heat & air?
17. Would you rather be a part of a forest or of a street?
18. Are you willing to be your own police and fire department?
19. Have you ever been declared insane by friends? Medical authorities?
Government authorities?
20. Do you ever worry that you might be sane and that the rest of the world
has gone mad?
21. Are you swayed by logical arguments? Theological? Emotional?
22. Is it more fun to learn a new job or to repeat the old one?
23. Do you understand what you are doing, or are you just going thru the
