  1. Pore:  This is a freeze fracture
  2. electron microscope image of a
  3. NUCLEAR ENVELOPE and cytoplasm.  
  4. Note the moon-like appearance of
  5. the nucleus.  Each one of these
  6. pits represents a pore.  The pores
  7. allow for communication between the
  8. nuclear and cytoplasmic
  9. compartments.  The number of pores
  10. is so large that an additional
  11. network of fibers called the lamina
  12. is needed to hold the nucleus
  13. together.  The hole is only about
  14. 9nm wide.  Molecules of under 5000
  15. mol wt can cross quickly.  In
  16. addition ribonuclear proteins
  17. including mRNA cross.  The barrier
  18. is selective since we know that
  19. only mRNA with poly A tails cross
  20. and the hnRNAs do not.
