SwimBase Quick Start
This document will present one example of how to setup
SwimBase and define your events, season, meet and swimmers.
After you have successfully installed (see INSTALL.DOC and
SWIMBASE.MAN) the SwimBase program on your disk you can follow
these simple steps to get started. Refer to the SwimBase program
manual (SWIMBASE.MAN) as you proceed for a complete explanation of
each menu item and form field.
Program and Menu Usage
The basic use of all menus is the same. The up and down arrow
keys are used to move within the menu or by pressing the first
letter of a menu item it can be jumped to. The selection is picked
by pressing the ENTER key. On the menus that can span more than one
screen full of data such as the swimmer requestor the Page Up and
Page Down keys move a page at a time rather than a item at a time.
The ESC key will return to the previous menu or selection or exit
the program from the opening menu. The ESC key is consistent
throughout the program to cancel the current selection.
You can exit any input form or menu by pressing the ESC key.
There are 3 special keys that are active in any menu. ALT/C
(holding down the ALT key and pressing C) will open a time
calculator window. This calculator will allow you to add, subtract
and divide time in minutes:seconds:hundreds format. See the manual
section on the Time Calculator for details. ALT/A (holding down the
ALT key and pressing A) will open the 'About SwimBase' window with
memory usage statistics. ALT/D will shell out (exit) to DOS. This
DOS shell will allow any DOS commands or actions to be taken. You
can return to SwimBase at the point you left by entering 'EXIT' at
the DOS prompt.

Program Setup
Step 1. Define the System and Team Defaults
Start the SwimBase program and select 'Set or Change
Defaults'.
Review these settings using the program manual (SWIMBASE.MAN)
to see if they are appropriate for your PC and swim team. In most
cases you will be able to proceed with your setup without modifying
any of these defaults.
Step 2. Define your meet events and scoring rules.
Select 'Modify Events or Age Grps' from the Opening Menu and
then select 'Modify Globals' to set the global parameters for your
events. Refer to the program manual for complete details.
Now elect 'Modify Events or Age Grps' from the Opening Menu
and then select 'Modify Events' to define each event. Your swim
league manual should have a list of all the events that you will
need and these should be entered here.
You should also review the age groups by selecting 'Set Age
Groups' to ensure that the defined age groups are correct for your
team.
Step 3. Define a Season.
Select 'Define New Season' from the Opening Menu and enter the
appropriate data for your season.
When this is complete then select 'Select Active Season' and
pick your new season in order to move to the Main Menu.
Step 4. Enter your swimmers personal data.
Select 'Swimmer data Add or Modify' from the Main Menu and
then 'Add Data for New Swimmer' from the Swimmer Setup Menu and
enter each swimmer's data.
When you are finished return to the Main Menu.
Step 5. Define one or more of your Meets.
Select 'Meet Data Add or Modify' from the Main Menu and build
one or more of your Meets.
When you are finished return to the Main Menu.

Step 6. If you have meet results available, enter them now.
Select 'Event Data Add or Modify' from the Main Menu and then
select 'Add Individual Event Results'.
You can select your swimmer's names by entering the swimmer
number (available in the Roster Reports), by entering the first few
letters of the swimmer's last name or by the swimmer's last and
first initial separated by a space.
Select the appropriate event number.
Enter the swimmer's time remembering that if the time is less
than 1 minute to use zeros not spaces to pad the time (IE: 0:23:42,
not :23:42).
Enter the status and place.
At this point you are ready to start pulling the various
reports from the Reports Menu. Access this menu from the Opening
Menu, Reports, View or Print.
Refer to the program manual to see what each report does or
just experiment with them. No report will modify your data so there
is no risk involved in requesting any report.
