STUDY BUDDY
Flash Cards
Version 1.0
Copyright 1990 Tom Gough
ABOUT STUDY BUDDY
-----------------
Many courses taken in school require memorization of numerous terms and
definitions. Foreign language courses require students to translate
phrases and sentences from their native language to a foreign language
and vice versa. STUDY BUDDY has been designed to allow you to easily
create flash cards that will aid you in preparing for exams in courses
of these types.
Each flash card consists of two sections: a question box and an answer
box. Just fill in these boxes with your questions and answers and you
are ready to test yourself almost immediately.
A unique feature of STUDY BUDDY is that you are not required to wait
until you have typed an entire answer before finding out whether it
is correct or not. STUDY BUDDY checks each answer letter you type and
reports on its accuracy. STUDY BUDDY will even give you a little help
whenever you need it.
Complete details about how to use the program follow.
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
---------------------------
Single diskette drive, 256K RAM, and DOS Version 2.11 or later.
Any monitor.
FILES ON THIS DISKETTE
----------------------
BUDDY.EXE -the executable program file.
BUDDY.CFG -maintains the current color configuration you have
chosen.
BUDDY.DOC -the file you are reading now.
STATE1.BDY -flash card files prepared by the author which quiz you
STATE2.BDY on all 50 states and their capitals. The flash card
CAPITAL1.BDY files that you create will also be saved with the .BDY
CAPITAL2.BDY file name extension.
BUDDY.EXE, BUDDY.CFG, and flash card files with the .BDY file name
extension must all reside on the same diskette or in the same
directory if you are using a hard disk system.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
-------------------
To run the program, type BUDDY at the DOS prompt and press ENTER.
The main menu will appear and you may choose from the following
selections:
1. Study Cards
2. Make Cards
3. Edit Cards
4. Delete Cards
5. Quit
These menu selections are discussed in the following sections:
1. STUDY CARDS
--------------
Choose this selection if you would like to study any of the card files
that were created from the Make Cards menu selection.
It is advised that upon running the program for the first time that you
should choose this selection first and practice some of the flash card
files that were created by the author. This will help you understand the
general structure of the program and will be an aid to you when you are
ready to create your own flash cards.
After you have made this selection, a listing of the available card
files to study will appear. Use the up, down, left, and right arrow
keys to highlight the card file you wish to study and then press the
ENTER key.
The main flash card screen will appear. The question will be displayed
in the larger box at the top of the screen and a blinking cursor will
appear in the smaller, answer box located in the middle section of the
screen.
Begin typing your answer. Each letter you type will be checked for
correctness by the program. If the answer letter you type is correct,
that letter will appear in the answer box and the blinking cursor will
advance one column to the right, waiting for the next answer letter to
be typed.
Only letters that are correctly typed will appear in the answer box.
If the letter you type does not correspond to the correct answer
letter, an asterisk (*) will appear above the blinking cursor. The
cursor will stay in its present position until the correct letter is
typed. Once the correct letter has been typed, the cursor will advance,
but the asterisk remains, indicating that you still need practice.
If you do not know the correct letter to type, press F2 and the correct
answer letter will be typed for you. The cursor will then move one column
to the right, awaiting the next answer letter to be typed. You may press
F2 as often as you like, but each time you do, a question mark (?) will
appear above the answer letter, indicating that you requested help.
The object, of course, is to be able to type the correct answer without
any question marks or asterisks appearing in the answer box.
You can press the DEL (Delete) key at any time to erase your answer and
start over from the beginning.
When the entire answer has been correctly typed, either by yourself or
by using F2, the blinking cursor will disappear, indicating that the
answer has been completed. Once the blinking cursor disappears, you must
press DEL before trying the answer again.
Use the PAGE keys at any time to select a different card to study.
You do not have to finish answering any particular question before you
try another. The program keeps track of your progress on each attempted
answer. The PgDn key will take you to the next flash card and the PgUp
key will take you to the previous flash card.
Press CTRL-P to print a hardcopy of the questions only. This is a useful
feature which allows you to test yourself at times when a computer is
not available.
Press F1 at any time to see a list of additional command keys and also
to see a list of the available foreground (FG) and background (BG) color
selection keys. By repeatedly pressing the color selections keys you can
choose colors for the question and answer boxes that are the most
pleasing to you.
Press ESC (Escape) when you have finished studying a flash card file.
Your progress on the answers and your color configuration will be saved.
You will then be taken back to the main menu screen, where you may
choose another selection or choose to quit the program. The next time
you load this file, you will be taken directly to the flash card that
you were last studying.
2. MAKE CARDS
-------------
Choose this selection when you are ready to make your own flash cards.
After choosing this selection, a listing of the existing flash card
files will appear. A blinking cursor will appear in a box near the
bottom portion of the screen. Type a NEW name, from 1 to 8 characters
in length, using any combination of legitimate DOS file name characters.
You will not be allowed to enter a name that is already in use. Do not
type a file name extension. The file name extension .BDY will be
automatically appended to all the flash card files you create.
Next, press ENTER and you will be taken to the flash card screen. Type
the question in the larger box at the top of the screen and type the
answer in the smaller box located near the middle of the screen. The
question can contain from 1 to 6 lines of text, while the answer
consists of only one line.
Press the ENTER key to go to the next line in the question or to
proceed from the last line of the question box to the answer box.
Pressing the TAB key will always take you directly to the answer box.
Pressing ENTER while in the answer box will return you to the first
line of the question box.
Each flash card file consists of up to 25 flash cards. Press the PgDn
key to go to the next card and use the PgUp key to go to the previous
card.
You are not required to fill in all 25 cards. Cards that are left blank
will merely appear as blank cards when you choose to study the cards
later.
