Reviewer's Rating: Very Good (A-)
Productivity software for the C-128 is rare, and utilities are like hen's
teeth. When I first saw the ad for this product, I just could not resist. I
was not dissapointed. The Super '81 Utilities package is a comprehensive and
useful tool for single and multiple disk drive owners of Commodore's 1571 and
1581. Many disk tools are built into this menu driven program. The most
exciting utilities are for Commodore's new 1581, 3 1/2" drive. At last,
partitions revealed!
Summery of features:
File Copy between drives, or between partitions (max. of 50 files)
Disk Copy between drives or same drive (any combination of one or two drives)
Directory of disk or partitions
Create or select partitions, Create AutoBoots
Format 1571 disks in almost any way possible
Scratch Files, Change Disk Name, Rename, Bulk Erase, Lock or Unlock Files
Direct DOS Commands, Validate Disk, Trash Tracks
Drive RAM and ROM Monitor
Fully Functional Disk Editor
Some CP/M Utilities
Free Spirit Software is shipping Super 81 Utilities containing a well
documented 28 page leaflet and two copies of the program. Yes, two disks! The
3 1/2" version is for an '81 as device 8, while the 5 1/2" version for a '71 as
device 8. A pleasant surprise in this age of copy protection!
Presently, Super 81 Utilities is also available through a liscencing agree-
ment with Utilities Unlimited on a ROM chip that plugs into the C-128's empty
socket. The program is bootable only from device eight (8 or 9 for the C-64
version). Loading is quick, however not all of it is memory resident. The
program disk is sometimes needed in drive eight for the Disk Copy, File Copy,
Disk Editor, and Drive Monitor portions of the program. This is due to the
large copy buffer size of 220 blocks. Super 81 Utilities allows you to abort
most operations by hitting the Escape key, uses function key commands, and has
several easy to use menu driven displays.
The three most powerful features are the Drive Monitor, Disk Editor, and Ram
Writer. Just these routines alone will justify the package price! The Drive
Monitor allows a user to PEEK into the drive's ROM (or even RAM), disassemble,
and save to a disk file with commands that are similar to the C-128's ML
Monitor. The Disk Editor will allow you to actually view and change any
information, anywhere on a disk. Both ASCII and HEX values are displayed, side
by side, and can be edited by using the dual cursor. By displaying and editing
the Track and Sector you can quickly repair those problem files or even make a
1581 disk function as a 1571 disk. Loading and running your own programs in
the drive's RAM is also possible with the Ram Writer.
One of the best features are the many partition commands which includes
creating, selecting, formatting, and copying to or from partitions and drives.
Not only does the program make this easy but a much needed description of
partitions is fully documented. Nice work!
For day to day usage, the File and Disk Copy sections are flexible enough for
all of my disk chores especially when the program self-configures to my system.
Super 81 Utilities is a must for '81 owners but if you don't have one, the
program still provides ample support for the '71 to justify the price.
I must also relate some minor dissapointments that I found while using this
utility. You must be careful when formatting disks on drive eight and one of
the first things that should be done is to make a back-up copy, due to the lack
of prompts when formatting disks on that drive.. Mark Brannon suggests
installing the write protect tabs when you first unpack Super 81 Utilities.
Also you can format several types of MFM disks, but you can not display CP/M
directories, and if you want your default values for the function keys back
after exiting then you must hit the Commodore's reset button. When comparing
these few problems with the entire package, and the availability of a 'Tech
Hotline' (312-352-7335) Super 81 Utilities will be around for a long time. Joe
Hubbard, of Free Spirit Software, has suggested that ideas for updates be
directed to his office. Hopefully, an update would include a boot from nine
option and R.E.U. utilities.
Other Software by Mark Brannon:
1541/1571 Drive Alignment
Super Disk Utilities (1571,1541)
Super Disk Librarian (C-128)
Ultra DOS Utilities (Amiga)
