Lesson 5
DOCUMENT APPEARANCE
While editing a document, you may often want to change the
characters of a word or words to uppercase or lowercase, or to
capitalize a word. The Appearance...Word commands allow you to
do this. Here's how:
Place the cursor at the beginning of this line and select:
Escape...Appearance...Word...ALL CAPS
"Place" is immediately changed to "PLACE," and the cursor is
moved to the blank space after the word. To continue uppercasing
words on the line, select:
Escape...Repeat
Escape...Repeat
.....etc.
This simple procedure is used for all the commands on the
WORD submenu which change the appearance of words or characters.
Try a few more. Scroll back to the previous screen and change
the words back to lowercase (Escape...Appearance...Word...
Lowercase). Then, capitalize the first letter of each word
(Escape...Appearance...Word...Capitalize).
How many times have you typed "beleive" for "believe," or
"thsi" for "this." TRANSPOSITION of characters is a very common
typing error. Usually we discover it only after we've gone
several lines beyond the word. Perfect Writer provides a command
to correct such errors. To see how it works, let's correct the
following transposition error, changing "ese" to "see."
ese
Simply place the cursor on the second of the two characters
to be transposed--"s"--and type the command:
Escape...Appearance...Transpose
Simple!
If you want to CENTER text on a line, Perfect Writer allows
you to do that, too. Place the cursor anywhere on the command
line below, and select:
Escape...Appearance...Line...Center
If you want to begin a new page at a particular point in
your document, you can INSERT a PAGEBREAK. Let's do it. Move
the cursor to any blank line on the screen and select:
Escape...Appearance...Document...Insert page break
Perfect Writer inserts a line across the screen. When the
document is printed, this line will be interpreted as beginning a
new page. It will cause the printer to skip to a new page before
printing whatever text follows.
To delete a page break, simply place the cursor on the line
where the page break begins and select:
Escape...Cut...Entire line
You can also paginate a document by inserting pagebreaks at
fixed intervals, using:
Escape...Appearance...Document...Paginate
Perfect Writer will ask you to specify the number of lines
you want to print on each page. If you don't specify a
particular number of lines, Perfect Writer will use a default
setting of 50 lines per page.
SUMMARY
In this short lesson, you learned how to alter the
appearance of screen text: uppercase, lowercase, capitalize, and
center words and lines. You saw how to transpose characters,
paginate a document, and insert page breaks.
This completes the lesson on Document Appearance. If you wish
to proceed to Lesson 6 which discusses "Searching," select:
Escape...Documents...Read
When Perfect Writer asks "Document to read," type "lesson6,"
followed by the Return key. Perfect Writer will read Lesson 6
into memory and switch you to it.
If you do not wish to continue, select:
Escape...Exit PW
IMPORTANT: Perfect Writer will respond with the message:
"Document(s) not saved! Do you still wish to exit?" Answer `y'
for Yes, since you do not want to save any changes made during
the lesson.
Perfect Writer will return you to the PSI Menu, from where
you can return to the operating system.
