Jamaica, the largest English-speaking country in the Caribbean, (about the
size of Connecticut,) was first visited by Columbus in 1494, and was
colonised by the Spanish shortly afterwards. Although they remained in
possession of the island for about 150 years, until the British took over
about 1655, surprisingly little evidence remains of their occupation.
Jamaica became an independent nation in 1962, and is a member of the British
Comminwealth. Its current population of nearly 2.5 million is mostly of
African origin.
The island of Jamaica is very mountainous, with the highest range, the Blue
Mountains in the eastern part of the country, reaching a maximum elevation of
7402 feet. In other parts of the island the peaks are mostly in the 2000' to
3000' range, although 2 or 3 exceed this height. The north coast of the
island is the area most tourists favour, with many fine hotels and beautiful
beaches. The west coast at Negril has miles of mostly uninhabited beaches.
The south side of the island, which includes the capital, Kingston is more
rugged. There are high cliffs in some places and also swamps and marshes.
Towns and cities represented on the scenery files include Kingston, Spanish
Town a few miles to the west, and Mandeville, 2000' up in the hills in the
south-central area. Savannah-la-Mar is on the south-west coast with Montego
Bay, usually referred to as "Mobay" on the western part of the north coast.
Mobay is the arrival point for most tourists visiting the island. Finally, at
the east end of the north coast is Port Antonio. Descriptions and locations
of aeronautical facilities follow.

______________________________________________________________________________ NOTES
Use of Scenery Disk SD-7 is not necessary with these scenery files. However
if you do use it, and load it from Miami with PRSTART.MOD or similar, it will
make relative bearings more accurate by 2 degrees. Loading SD-7 from a
Jamaican mode will have no effect on bearings.
The off-island Navaids were put in to assist those planning to fly to Jamaica
from either Florida or Hispaniola. it is recommended that you use the
appropriate charts for this purpose, either WAC (CH-25,CJ-26 & CJ-27) or the
relevant en route low altitude charts. Bearings will not be 100% accurate but
are close enough that you should have no difficulty finding the island. If
you are flying from Florida you may notice that Cuba is missing!
