This unusual aircraft has had an uncertain history, and at this point,
I do not know if any will ever go to production. I do know that the military
does feel that it needs an aircraft of this type. The OV-22 tiltrotor, known
as the Osprey has the unusual ability to take off like a helicopter, with
it's engines at 90 degrees to the fusalage, and then tilt the engines forward
for speed and handling like a normal aircraft. It needs to tilt back the
engines to land however. In reality, the aircraft is big and heavy, so at
takeoff, it really needs a short run. I have modeled the OV-22 as a MV-22
US Marine assault Osprey. It's main job would be to insert,extract up to
24 combat troops or resuply. At this weight, it will not hover very well, but
can "almost" hover.
It took some doing to tweak the flight model, and I am not so sure that
I have the body completely right. The only photo-picture I could find was
in the front cover of Dale Brown's book "Hammerheads". However, I do like
the way the model handles. I have encluded a mod file (Meigs- where else) and
a demo. The demo will give you some idea of power settings for different
flight modes. In short, the demo does a slow speed engines up circuit of
the airfield and then a slow speed hover landing. The aircraft then takes
off and converts to high speed flight configuration. You will see the engines
move forward. After a high speed pass, the aircraft assumes the landing
configuration and does a higher speed asault landing.
In short, I have modeled the flaps and spoiler controls to act as a
variable nozzle type effect ( the Harrier is coming- this was the basis
for this model as the jet worked better than the prop sim). To take off,
set flaps full, spoiler on, and then full power. Pull back and up you
go like an elevator. You can now pull up gear, pull spoilers, and then
push down the nose slightly to increase forward speed and retract flaps.
Adjust power for normal flight. At 80 knots, the engines move forward and
the model flys like a normal aircraft. Top speed is just over 350 kts. To
land, do the reverse. Pull power, and at about 200 kts, hit the spoilers.
at 150 kts, trim down and hit first position flaps. Increase power to remain
level or to slow down decent. At 100 kts, hit full flaps. You will slow
down to engine up configuration. Extend landing gear. You should practice
approaches and power settings. Remember to pull back on the stick just
before touchdown. Have fun with this one. Comments would really really
be welcomed. I am happy with this sim, given the limitations of FS. I hope
you enjoy this one. I modeled the prop spin at the slow speed mode, If I
left the prop spin on at the normal flight mode, the aircraft would not
have sat correctly even if the prop spin was not showing. The Helijet voc
is the recommened jet sound to use if you have the SGA.
