Hello Tailhookers: 9 Nov 87
In response to AFSSTUNTS I have attempted to
create an air-combat manuvering scenario which includes a
head to head encounter and various gyrations to test
piloting skill. Both of them require Electronic Arts
"Advanced Flight Simulator" and can be accessed from the
"FORMATION FLYING" and "MANUEVER" options on the main menu.
The stunt entitled "BLUANG" (Blue Angels) is intitated by
turning to the LEFT when the lead aircraft starts to the right
and assuming a heading of approximately 300 degrees as shown
on the "instrument panel". After 5-10 seconds turn RIGHT to
a heading of East (90 Deg.) intercept the other aircraft,
attempt to get on its tail and maintain a trailing position
through a Cuban-8 and vertical rolling scissors. It is NOT easy.
"FASTGT" takes you through the most challenging AFS obstacle in
a jet aircraft as opposed to the Spad (as demo'ed on the
distribution disk.) The pilot must be very quick and judicious
with elevator inputs if he or she wants to pass through all
the obstacles as...this aircraft will not respond in pitch
at high angle of attack (Stall).
Another manuever "RNDGT" (Around Gates) is initiated by
following the leader through a series of rolls, loops, and
swoops to develop formation flying skill. Note that in
all cases the mapping feature presented at the end of
the stunt is of great value for assesing the gyrations
involved but the "score" is relative only, not absolute from
zero to 100 because of the dissimilar flight paths. Skill in
formation flying is exhibited by maintaining separation regardless
of the leaders turn rate and velocity vector; and by generating a high
rate of closure during an intercept. The stunt entitled
SKIM presents a series of constant rate low altitude turns to
aid in further developing formation flying expertise. To close
on a leading aircraft aim your HUD "pipper" slightly to the inside of the
quarry's turn. To hold position through manuevers keep the
"pipper" slightly outside or tangent to the turn. By using the pipper as a
reference the rate of closure can be controlled with precision.
I recommend using the 1X ZOOM option for all stunts; Have fun.
Feel free to contact me if you have a question. If you have
recorded manuevers I'd like to try them.
