SOUTHERN ONTARIO AREA AIRPORTS STUDY - VISUAL DATABASE
(aussi disponsible en français)
TRANSPORT CANADA CONTACT PERSON:
Mr. Paul Kavanagh
Regional Manager, Safety, Security & SOAAS
Transport Canada - Airports Group (PKS)
4900 Yonge Street, 4th Floor
Willowdale, Ontario M2N 6A5 (416) 224-3190
FAX. (416) 224-3145
STUDY HISTORY:
In August of 1989, the strategy for aviation in southern Ontario
was announced by former Minister of Transport Benoit Bouchard. It
stated that Lester B. Pearson International Airport would continue
as the major airport and be developed to its optimum capacity in
terms of social, economic, environmental, and transportation
considerations. The other airports in southern Ontario would be
developed to respond to the immediate demands for aviation
infrastructure and ultimately to fulfil their roles within the area
airports system and eventually supplement the role of Pearson
International Airport. The second part of this strategy involves
the Southern Ontario Area Airports Study (SOAAS).
SOAAS is currently underway, analyzing the capacity and future
potential of the major airports in south-central Ontario. The
project focuses on the area airports as a system and will produce
recommendations regarding Transport Canada's involvement with these
airports, to meet future aviation demands. Actions involving
Transport Canada will not be proposed until the completion of this
study, estimated to be in early 1993.
The study sites are as follows:
Brampton Brantford Burlington
Buttonville Cambridge/Reid's Field Downsview
Greenbank Grimsby Airpark Guelph
Hamilton Lindsay Markham
Nobleton Oro-Barrie-Orillia Oshawa
Peterborough Pottageville Rockton
St. Catharines Stoney Creek Toronto Island
Waterloo/Guelph Welland York
Pickering (undeveloped)
As part of the initial phase of SOAAS, all pertinent data for the
study sites was collected. Previous studies, current Master Plans,
and all other available information has been assembled in the SOAAS
Database. A co-operative education student used the Aircraft and
Scenery Designer of the Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 computer
program to create a "Visual Database" of the study airports.
SOAAS VISUAL DATABASE:
The SOAAS Visual Database was designed to allow for simulation of
additions and/or modifications to airport facilities as well as to
function as a public relations tool. The database will be
distributed as "shareware". Comments and/or corrections to the
details included can be forwarded to the above address.
The following sources were used to create the database:
Canada Flight Supplement (CFS)
Ministry of Natural Resources, maps
Transport Canada - Airports Group, maps
VFR (Visual Flight Rules) Navigation Charts
Photographs (taken July 29 - August 1, 1991)
Site Visits
To use the database, you must have the:
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0
- Microsoft Flight Simulator, Aircraft & Scenery Designer
- System Requirements as per page 5 of the Aircraft & Scenery
Designer User's Guide
USING THE DATABASE:
To gain access to the new files, load them onto the same directory
as your program. NOTE: The scenery uses the default scenery, not
Scenery Disk #11. The files, Flight Simulator 4.0 and Aircraft &
Scenery Designer can fit on a 1.44 MB 3.5" disk if you eliminate
non-essential files. The files are quite large. The mode with the
747 glass cockpit uses a lot of memory. The computer sometimes
runs out of memory when running the Designer to view scenery files
in this mode. The Flight Simulator will shut itself down and you
must reboot your system.
In creating the database, imperial measurements were used for
runways and taxiways, but metric was used for building heights.
The real "round" world uses latitude and longitude. The flight
simulator "flat" world uses its own system comprising of north and
east coordinates. Chicago was calculated to be at the centre and
was used as the starting point to the database. For instance,
small changes were made to Lake Ontario to allow for proper
positioning of the airports. The coordinates of the sites are
given in the "Airport Details" section below.
AIRPORT FILES:
There are five different types of files (differentiated by their
extensions):
1. Static Scenery Files - .SC1
2. Dynamic Scenery Files - .DY1
3. Demo Files - .DEM
4. Mode Files - .MOD
5. Text Files - .TXT
The following files have been included with this package:
