Directory Legend / Sample
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 - City / Airport Name
Airports and facilities in this directory are listed alphabetically by associated city and state. Airports with
the same associated city name will be listed alphabetically by airport name and will be separated by a dashed
rule line. All others will be separated by a solid rule line.
2 - Location Identifier
A three or four character code assigned to airports. These identifiers are used by ATC in lieu of the airport
name in flight plans, flight strips and other written records and computer operations.
3 - Geographic Position of Airport\Navaid in Latitude and Longitude Coordinates
4 - Geographic Position of Airport in Flight Simulator Coordinates
5 - Elevation
Elevation is given in feet above mean sea level (MSL) and is the highest point on the landing surface. When
elevation is sea level it will be indicated as (00). When elevation is below sea level a minus (-) sign will
precede the figure.
6 - Rotating Light Beacon
B indicates a green and white rotating beacon is available to identify airports at night.
7 - Fuel Availability
F indicates fuel is available.
8 - Traffic Pattern Altitude
Traffic Pattern Altitude (TPA) - The first figure shown is TPA above mean sea level. The second figure in
parentheses is TPA above airport elevation or ground level (AGL).
9 - Charts
The Sectional Chart and Low and High Altitude Enroute Chart and panel on which the airport or facility is
located.
10 - Instrument Approach Procedures
IAP indicates an airport for which a prescribed (Public Use) FAA Instrument Approach Procedure has been
published.
11 - Runway Data
Runway information is shown on two or more lines. That information common to the entire runway is shown on the
first line while information concerning the runway ends are shown on the second or following line.
Runway direction, surface, length, width, lighting and appropriate remarks are shown for each runway.
Direction, length, width, lighting and remarks are shown for sealanes. The full dimensions of helipads are
shown.
Runway Surface and Length
Runway lengths prefixed by the letter "H" indicate that the runways are hard surfaced (concrete, asphalt). If
the runway length is not prefixed, the surface is sod, clay, etc. The runway surface composition is indicated
in parentheses after runway length as follows:
(AFSC) - Aggregate friction seal coat (GRVD) - Grooved (TURF) - Turf
(ASPH) - Asphalt (GRVL) - Gravel, or cinders (TRTD) - Treated
(CONC) - Concrete (PFC) - Porous friction courses (WC) - Wire combed
(DIRT) - Dirt (RFSC) - Rubberized friction seal coat
Directory Legend / Sample
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Runway Lighting
Lights are in operation sunset to sunrise. Types of lighting are shown with the runway end they serve.
REIL - Runway End Identifier Lights
MALSF - Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights
MALSR - Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights
SALSF - Short Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights
SSALS - Simplified Short Approach Lighting System
SSALF - Simplified Short Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights
SSALR - Simplified Short Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights
ALSF-I - High Intensity Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights, Category I Configuration
ALSF-II - High Intensity Approach Lighting System with Sequenced Flashing Lights, Category II Configuration
VASI - Visual Approach Slope Indicator System (Approach slope angle will be shown after lighting system
indicator)
Runway End Data
Lighting Systems such as VASI, MALSR, REIL; obstructions; displaced thresholds will be shown on the specific
runway end. "Rgt tfc" - Right traffic indicates right turns should be made on landing and takeoff for specified
runway end.
12 - Communications
Communications will be listed in sequence in the order shown below:
Common Traffice Advisory Frequency (CTAF), Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) and Aeronautical
Advisory Stations (Unicom), the control tower, ground control and clearance delivery along with their
frequency is shown, where available, on the line following the heading "COMMUNICATIONS." When the CTAF and
Unicom is the same frequency, the frequency will be shown as CTAF/Unicom freq.
Terminal Services
CTAF - A program designed to get all vehicles and aircraft at uncontrolled airports on a common frequency.
ATIS - A continuous broadcast of recorded non-control information in selected areas of high activity.
Unicom - A non-government air/ground radio communications facility utilized to provide general airport advisory
service.
Tower - Control tower
Gnd Con - Ground Control
Clnc Del - Clearance Delivery
13 - Radio Aids to Navigation
The Airport Facility Directory lists by facility name all Radio Aids to Navigation, except Military TACANs,
that appear on National Ocean Service Visual or IFR Aeronautical Charts and those upon which the FAA has
approved an Instrument Approach Procedure.
VOR - VHF navigational facility-omnidirectional course only
VOR/DME - Collocated VOR navigational and UHF standard distance measuring equipment.
VORTAC - Collocated VOR and TACAN navigational facilities.
ILS - Instrument Landing System
NDB - Non-directional beacon
LOM - Compass locator station when installed at outer marker site
14 - Navaid name
15 - Navaid type and frequency
16 - Bearing and distance facility to center of nearest airport
17 - Elevation and magnetic variation at VOR site
