CTABDL.SC1 - Springfield/Bradley transition scenery
Massachusetts west of the greater Boston area is pretty empty on SD-12 so
a while back I started filling it in. My Worcester area scenery started
this effort and this scenery extends it further west, covering approximately
the area from the west of Worcester to around Springfield. A number of
airports are included in this region, the most significant being Barnes
Municipal at Westfield and almost next to it Westover AFB in Chicopee.
Westover has one of the biggest runways you'll ever see: 11,600 feet long
and 300 feet wide. For a challenge, try landing on it *sideways* An
ultralight or one of the slower planes should be able to do it.
Northampton is a particularly scenic airport. I recently visited there
as part of my student pilot training. It's nestled in a bend of the
Connecticut River, just inside a highway. Right next to the river is
a ridge of 1000 foot hills, which make the traffic pattern for runway 32
very interesting! To the right of runway 32 is a huge corn field and
the row of trees you'll see just off the end of the runway is just as I
remember them in real life. The day I was there a circus was being set
up on the airport property and I've included the big top in the scenery.
Since there's already so much good scenery in the surrounding areas I made
an effort to make all the scenery merge properly. The biggest problem was
with Jim Ross's Connecticut scenery, since the highest concentration of
scenery in his CTAWEST.SC1 file is right at the edge (Bradley airport) and
likewise the MASCEFNA.SC1 file's highest concentration is at its edge
(Springfield area) and these two points are right next to each other. To
make the scenery areas merge, I created a transitional scenery file,
CTABDL.SC1 that covers just the Springfield/Bradley area, with it's center
between the main areas and a smaller radius. CTABDL.SC1 contains scenery
from both Jim Ross's file and from mine, there's no new scenery in it but
it does make the transition between the two areas smooth.
This file transitions smoothly with my Worcester scenery but less so with
Rich Bonneau's Gardner area scenery to the north. The problem is that
Rich's scenery is really a long thin area rather than a circle. The
solution I came up with was to move his center point to 18021/21631 and
cut the radius to 10 miles. Then, make a second copy (MAAORERB.SC1) and
make its center point 18006/21528. This setup makes all the area scenery
mesh nicely.

Thanks to all those who have created scenery in the surrounding areas
that make flying in this region so much fun! A special thanks to
Chris Geanacopoulos [70205,774] who provided an extensive set of photos
and maps of Springfield which greatly aided in doing that area.
