MISSION MODULES FOR
THEIR FINEST HOUR: BATTLE OF BRITAIN
(Modules Written by: Steven L. Hildebrand)
==========================================
"Their Finest Hour" by LucaArts is a Most Excellent air-comat
simulator, second (in my opinion) only to "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe"
(SWOTL), also by LucasArts. Battle of Britain (or BOB) has it's own mission
builder to accomodate persons like myself who like to set up next to
impossible situations and then try to fight my way out of them. This first
collection of mission modules is the result of that aim. More collections
will be forthcoming, whenever I get around to writing, debugging (playing)
and releasing more. Also, I want to do the same thing with SWOTL.
Anyway, so this ZIP file should contain the following mission modules
for Battle of Britain:
BEACHCHL.FLT BUZZARDS.FLT DEEPSHIT.FLT DETHWISH.FLT
DUKSHOOT.FLT GAUNTLET.FLT INCOMING.FLT PAYBACK1.FLT
PAYBACK2.FLT STRAFE.FLT SUICIDE1.FLT TUFF2.FLT
VALKRIE1.FLT
The following are descriptions of those missions and their parameters:
===========================================================================
BEACHCHL- In this scenario, you're part of a 6-plane flightgroup of
Bf110C/4B's taking off from Samer JG3 airfield to bomb and strafe
the Beachy Head Chain Home Low radar station. All planes in your
flightgroup are Top Aces. Along the way, you will be opposed by:
2 flights of (2) Hurricane's from Tangmere & Lympne fields
2 flights of (3) Hurricane's from Westhampnett & Kenley fields
All opposing flights will be Top Aces and are set on 5-wave mode.
You have no escort.
BUZZARDS- In this scenario, 5 flights of (3) Ju-87 B-2's are inbound to
dive bomb Ventnor Chain Home radar station. You and your Spitfire
Mk.2 are all that stands in their way. While the Stuka's are
unescorted, all are Top Aces, which means that you should watch
out for their wing guns, as well as their tail gunners. This may
look easy. It isn't. Trust me.
DEEPSHIT- In this scenario, you're leading a group of (3) Spitfire Mk.2's,
(Top Aces) trying to intercept the following:
2 groups of (3) Ju-88A-1's escorted by 2 groups of (2) Bf109E-3's
Target: The Spitfire factory at Southhampton.
1 unescorted group of (3) Ju-88A-1's
Target: Ventnor Chain Home radar station
All are Aces. "Waves" function is turned off. Conserve Ammo!!
DETHWISH- In this amusing little scenario, you're part of a group of (4)
Bf110C/4B's on a mission to bomb and strafe Worth Chain Home Low
radar station. Your escort - (1) Bf110C/4. You're all Top Aces.
You will be opposed by 4 flights of (3) Hurricanes from Warmwell,
Middle Wallop and Gosport. All are Aces. Waves = 4
DUKSHOOT- I threw this one in for yuk's. You're piloting a Bf109E-4 "Jabo"
fighter/bomber on a mission to dive bomb and strafe Lympne field.
You have unlimited Gas and Ammo, but Standard Damage.
Opposing you are:
3 flights of (3) Hurricanes
1 flight of (3) Spitfire Mk.1's
1 flight of (3) Spitfire Mk.2's
All are Aces.
Waves = 5
With a wave factor of 5, this means you're heading into trouble.
Fight your way in, make the bomb run, then get the hell out.
GAUNTLET- This scenario has you as a wingman in a flight of (3) Ju-88A-1's
on a mission to bomb the Hurricane factory at Brooklands. You'll
be escorted by:
3 Bf110C/4's - (2) close escort, (1) free-ranging CAP
All are Top Aces.
You'll be opposed by:
5 flights of (3) Hurricanes
All are Aces. Waves = 2
This scenario will test your skills not only as a bombardier
and gunner, but also as a pilot and your ability to fly in
formation, which is the only way you'll live to see your home
airfield in Cherbourg again. Flying as a formation allows you
and your fellow pilots to protect each other with your guns.
INCOMING- You'll lead a group of (3) Spitfire Mk.2's, all Top Aces, trying
to stop an inbound flight of (3) Ju-88A-1's (Aces), escorted by a
pair of Bf109E-3's (Top Aces), who will Dive Bomb your home field
at Lympne. Evade the escort and stop those bombers, or Lympne is
Toast!
Simultaneously, another group of Ju-88A-1's and Bf109E-3 escorts
are making a run on the airfield next door at Hawkinge. If you
manage to stop the attack on your own field, fly over and help
your buddies at Hawkinge stop the next attack, but worry about
your own airfield first.
PAYBACK1- Tired of mounting loses, HQ has given the go-ahead to start
strafing attacks on German airfields in France. You've been given
the honor of leading the first such attack. Approaching Wissant
JG51 airfield, you and your wingman spot (3) Ju-88A-1's rolling
down the runway. Evade the (2) Bf109E-3's flying escort and drop
them before they can cross the Channel and bomb the airfield at
Lympne. There is also (2) Bf109E-3's flying free-ranging Cap in
the area. Deal with them.
Then fly over to Coquelles JG52 airfield and strafe any other
planes you find. Fire from close-in, and save some ammo for the
trip home. (hint)
PAYBACK2- A variation of PAYBACK1. In this scenario, instead of Ju88's, I
switched them for Bf110C/4B's. And this time, you don't have any
wingmen to cover your butt. Stay sharp!
STRAFE- Angered by RAF strafing attacks on several Luftwaffe airfields,
the High Command has decided to repay those attack in kind.
Flying a pair of Bf110C/4B's, you and your Top Ace wingman are to
bomb and strafe the Spitfire Mk.2's at Eastchurch and Detling
airfields. You will be opposed by 2 flights of (2) Hurricanes
(Top Aces). Waves = 3
SUICIDE1- On a mission to bomb and strafe Dover Chain Home Low radar
station, 2 flights of (3) Spitfire Mk.2's (Aces) suddenly appear
behind you. Since you have no escort, only your piloting skills
and your Top Ace tailgunner stand between you and a long, cold
swim back accross the Channel. Personally, I've never success-
fully flown this mission. I get my arse shot off ever time. Is it
impossible? Who knows.......
TUFF2- Flying solo in a Ju87 B-2 on a mission to dive bomb the radar
station at Ventnor, you are opposed by 2 flights of (2) Hurri-
canes (Aces). Waves = 2
VALKRIE- As in "Flight of the Valkries". This one has you flying intercept
for the RAF. Leading 2 flights of (2) Spitfire Mk.2's (Top Aces),
you have to try and intercept:
2 flights of (4) Bf110C/4B's (Top Aces)
2 flights of (2) Bf109E-3's (Top Aces) flying close escort
Targets: Manston Airfield & Foreness Chain Home Low Radar station
===========================================================================
So, there you have it, 13 missions in all, a baker's dozen. I hope you
enjoy them. Some of these are REALLY tough, but NOT impossible, with the
possible exception of SUICIDE1. If you can successfully complete these
missions, then you are one "Shit-Hot" pilot, or Sierra-Hotel as the
military pilots say it.
The mission-builder included with BOB is pretty easy to use. If you
haven't tried writing your own missions, read the directions and give it a
whirl. All of these missions were inspired by the release of "Their Finest
Missions", an add-on missions disk put out by LucasArts for $20. I haven't
gotten it yet, so I can't say how the missions on it are, but I figured
that maybe if BOB players like you and me started writing missions and
trading them back and forth, then we wouldn't have to pay LucasArts any
more money. Hell, if they didn't want us to write our own missions, then
they shouldn't have included the mission builder, right? You bet!
If I ever get around to figuring it out, I'll start using the mission
builder for SWOTL and write new SWOTL missions. That'll be interesting. I'd
be interested in hearing from other BOB and SWOTL fans and trade custom
missions back and forth. I can be reached at:
