Name of Tile Set - NAUTICAL.TIL
Subject - Marine flags
Created by - Norm Trudeau
In the days before radio, mariners used a system of alphabetical
flags to communicate with each other and shore based establishments. Each
letter of the alphabet was represented by a flag. Messages were passed by
either spelling out the entire message letter by letter, or by using a two,
three, or four flag letter code system . If you wish to have more information
on this subject, the publication "INTERNATIONAL CODE OF SIGNALS" covers it
in detail. As well, each letter flag "FLYING" by itself means something
- ie "B" - I am carrying a dangerous cargo, "O" - man overboard, and
"Z" - I require a tug, or just three examples.
Each flag is identified by using the accepted "phonetical" pronoun-
ciation of each letter. As you can imagine, in days when radio was first
used, static often made communication difficult. When this occured, words
were spelled out using this system to get their message across. Example,
the word MAHJONGG would be pronounced - Mike Alpha Hotel Juliette Oscar
November Gulf Gulf

Since this set is based on the ALPHABET, it is difficult to follow
the original tile set format for MAHJONGG. There are two wild card sets
and the 26 letters of the Alphabet, plus eight other flags that are marine
oriented.
