SETUP AND REQUIREMENTS:
Static Scenery Memory - 53,000
Dynamic Scenery Memory - 30,000
Max. Dynamic Scenery Objects Active - 40
SD-7 is recommended but not required.
The DCSDCRP.SC1 file comprises the DC Metro area, as well as the
Baltimore, Maryland area. Many buildings in Northern Virginia, downtown D.C.,
and Baltimore have been added. All local public airports have been added,
and all local navaids.
Since there is a high concentration of scenery in the downtown D.C.
area, XT users will probably have frame rate troubles in this area. You may
wish to change the maximum objects diplayed to a lower number to alleviate
this problem. Turning off the Dynamic Scenery will also help.
POINTS OF INTEREST:
The National Mall - This is the large park area extending west of the
Capitol Building to the Washington Monument. While this area is prohibited
airspace protected by surface-to-air missiles in reality, you can take an
aerial tour in FS4 without being arrested (or shot down). On either side of
the mall you will find the Smithsonian Institoution museums. SD-7 covers the
buildings on the north side of the Mall, but you will now find the Air &
Space Museum and Smithsonian Castle on the southern side. Just to the north
of the Mall you will find the Old Post Office, which is now a shopping mall.
Across Pennsylvania Avenue is the J. Edgar Hoover building, which is the
national headquarters for the FBI. Further down Pennsylvania Avenue, flanking
the White House are the old Executive Office Building and the Treasury
Department.
Downtown Washington - Just to the east of the Capitol, you will find
the Library of Congress, with the green dome, and the Supreme Court next to
that. North of this area, with many railroad tracks leading to it (with SD-7),
is Union Station. Directly east of the Capitol is RFK Stadium, where the
Redskins play their home games. The Jefferson Memorial has been added,
next to the Tidal Basin. The Kennedy Center for the Preforming Arts appears
next to the Potomac, across from Roosevelt Island. On the hills overlooking
the city is the Washington Cathedral, which was just recently completed.
Northern Virginia - Just to the west of DCA is Crystal City, a complex
of businesses and offices. Further up the Potomac is Rosslyn, where the twin
USA Today towers are located, much to the chagrin of many pilots approaching
DCA (and to USA Today employees, who claim they can often look into the windows
of passing airliners and clearly see the seated passengers!)
South of DCA, in Alexandria, is the George Washington Masonic Memorial.
Baltimore - DCSDCRP.SC1 adds some detail to Baltimore as well. BWI and
Martin State airports have been detailed, and some skyscrapers have been added
downtown.
Mount Vernon - George Washington's home appears about 10NM south of
the city. Be careful not to come too close though, the area is prohibited
airspace.
Washington National Airport - Despite the fact that this airport is
infamous for its wild appraoches (especailly the visual appraoch to runway 18),
it remains very busy, because of its proximity to downtown. I have
incorporated Jeff Bingham's rendidtion of this airport into the scenery.
Thanks Jeff!
DCDCA36.MOD puts you in position for IMMEDIATE departure from
runway 36 at National.
LEARJETD.MOD will place you at the entrance to the DCA River Visual
Runway 18, in a Learjet. You will be 3,000 feet above the David Taylor Model
Basin, just next to the beltway. Read the DCADCAJB.DOC file for more info on
the approach.
Around the Beltway - You will find several buildings along the
Beltway circling the city. On the Maryland side, you will find the Capital
Centre on the east end of the beltway. This is an arena where rock concerts
are held and the Wasington Capitals hockey team plays home games. The
unusual-looking building on the north side, on the inside of the bend, is the
Mormon Temple. Closed to the public, it is quite a sight to commuters on the
beltway. On the west end of the beltway, on either side of the river, are
the David Taylor Model Basin, and CIA Headqaurters. The long, thin building
is the model basin. It houses water tanks and wind tunnels that the Navy uses
to test model ships. On the Virginia side is the CIA, which you will find it
marked on most maps as the "Federal Highway Reasearch Center." Well, there's
more here than a research center. Anyway, here's hoping I don't get visited
by guys in dark suits for putting it in the scenery! Just to the south of
DCA in Arlington is the George Washington Masonic Temple, the "other
Washington Monument".
Dulles International Airport - Dulles is considered by many to be one
of the world's most beautiful airports. The airport is rendered in full
detail, except for the "swooping" suspension roof of the main terminal,
unless Laameing Wheeler makes a .SC0 file for it!
DULLES1R.MOD will put you in a 747-400, ready to depart from
runway 01R.
DULLES30.MOD puts you at the end of runway 30.
DULLESPA.MOD puts you in a Piper Archer at the General Aviation
ramp.
DULLES74.MOD is a 747 approach to Dulles from the south. You have
been cleared for runway 01R, but be sure to check for a 767 on a parallel
approach to 01L.
College Park Airport - This small airport is interesting because it
is the world's oldest. It was established in 1909 by the Wright Brothers to
test their Flyer. It is still in operation today, although now it mostly
caters to Cessnas.
OTHER MODES:
BALTIMOR.MOD - Starts you up on the ramp at Baltimore-Washington
International.
CARROLCO.MOD - Places your plane at Carrol County Airport, about
40 miles northwest of Baltimore.
DCSEAREF.MOD - The police are coming fast, because, yes, you're
going to take your DHC-2 seaplane off from the refelcting pool! The Otter
should have little trouble getting off in time, but be sure to avoid the
Washington Monument! If you want a little more challenge, try it in a Cessna
182 seaplane or, try LANDING in the pool.
DUSKFLIG.MOD - Sets you up for an evening flight over downtown D.C.
You begin at DCA on runway 3.
FREDERIC.MOD - Frederick is about 25NM northwest of town. You are on
the ramp area at the airport, which is headquarters for the AOPA.
VAAW09JB.MOD - Startup mode at Leesburg Municipal, about 9 NM
northwest of Dulles.
MANASSAS.MOD - This startup mode places you at Manassas Municipal,
about 11NM south of Dulles.
MARTINST.MOD - This will put you on the ramp at Martin State, just
north of Baltimore.
MONTGOME.MOD - Startup mode for Mongomery County airport, northwest
of downtown DC.
BAYBRIDG.MOD - Startup mode for Bay Bridge airport.
VAW1016L.MOD - This is an ILS approach for Manassas Municipal in
a learjet.
DEMOS:
DCTOUR.DEM - This is about a half-hour demo that will give you a
guided tour of the DC Metro area.
DCAVIS18.DEM - This demo file demonstrates the approach proceedures
for the Runway 18 River Visual approach to DCA.

LICENSING:
Since A&SD has come out, a lot of users have been developing
scenery files for their hometowns. Now that A&SD has been out for several
months, and there are now many users trading files on Compuserve and
BBS's around the world, a lot of duplicate files by separate authors are
showing up for the same areas. You can guess what is starting to happen.
"File Stealing", and accusations of file stealing are starting to rear
their ugly head(s). One user will start on a scenery file for his area,
one day call up the BBS and find another user has done a rendidtion of the
area, although perhaps not in the amount of detail to suit the first party.
So, guy #1 takes guy #2's scenery, merges it into his own, and then releases
them both as guy #1's work. This is clearly immoral and wrong.
In Version 2.0 of my Washington D.C. scenery, I included a rendidtion
of Washington National airport by Jeff Bingham. I too, had done National, in
version 1, but Jeff's was much better. So, I included it in WASHDC20. However,
I did not modify it at all. I did not remove anything from Jeff's original
file, not even the documents or modes. I feel that this is the best way to
include someone else's work. I have since called Jeff by telephone and
received his permission to include the file.
If you wish to use DCSDCRP.SC1 or DCSDCRP.DY1 as part of a scenery
file that you intend to distribute, then you must include it IN ITS
ENTIREITY. All static scenery objects and dynamic scenery objects must
be included, as well as all text and mode files found in WASHDC23.ZIP.
If you wish to only use part of the scenery, or if you intend to
modify it in any way and then distribute it, YOU MUST HAVE MY EXPRESS
PERMISSION, written or by telephone. You MUST ALSO HAVE THE EXPRESS PERMISSION
of Jeff Bingham, or any other scenery designer whose work is included.
All of the files in this archive are intended for non-commercial,
public domain use, and may be used, copied, and distributed subject to this
licence. This program is supplied "as is" and without any warranties,
express or implied, including fitness or suitability for a particular
purpose. The authors cannot be held liable for any accidental damages
incurred. The files in this archive may not be sold without express
permission of the authors.
I think if everyone applies these standards, then there will be a lot
less fights than necessary.
