I started Provincetown based on the U.S. Geological Survey map of the
area. Provincetown is a rather unique location, being on the end of
Cape Cod sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean, so I thought it would
be an interesting airport to add to my Massachusetts scenery collection.
The USGS map allowed me to position the major building, wharfs, etc.
Then I happened to mention the project to a friend who remembered he had
a videotape of a scenic flight he had taken from PVC the previous summer!
For some reason, he didn't concentrate on the airport buildings to any
great extent, but I was able to pick up enough of them in the background
the make the actual appearance of the buildings much more accurate and to
place other things like the fuel truck and parked aircraft. He did have
some good shots of Provincetown itself and I was able to greatly improve
the town as a result. So, between the maps and the videotape I think
the area looks pretty good. Now, if there were only some way to actually
show the dunes, etc. that really make up the landscape rather than the
plain dark green background SD-12 provides which really isn't accurate
here...
There are a number of lighthouses to look for (one right in line with
the approach to rwy 7). You're sure to spot the Pilgrim Monument right
in downtown Provincetown, since it's by far the tallest thing around.
The pyramid shaped building near the airport is a National Seashore
visitor's center. You'll also find many other buildings, motels, boats,
etc. around, including a number of objects added with SEE02.
The mode puts you in the middle of the parking area. The small shack
to your right is the office for the scenic flight operation.
