BLOHM und VOSS BV 141
The following is from THE WORLD'S GREATEST AIRCRAFT ..
Christopher Chant - Crescent Books - Brian Trodd Publishing
Copyright 1991 (an excellent book) :
In 1937 the German air ministry issued a requirement
for a short range reconnaissance and observation aircraft
with a single engine, a crew of three, and excellent all
round fields of vision. A proposal was submitted by three
aircraft companies and Dr. Richard Vogt produced a design
of extraordinary novelty. The BV 141 was a symmetric layout,
with a 865HP BMW 132N radial engine located at the front of
a nacelle/boom offset to port of the wing's longitudinal
center line and balanced by an extensively glazed crew
compartment, which was off set to starboard. The official
preference was for the Focke-Wulf FW189, which featured a
well-glazed central nacelle and twin tail booms, but Blohm
and Voss decided to produce its prototype as a private
venture.
The BV 141 first flew in February 1938, and was
followed by two further machines each slightly larger than
the first. The third aircraft also featured wider track main
landing gear units, armament, and cameras. The BV 141 was
successful enough in its trials for the air ministry to order
five BV 141 pre-production aircraft with a wider wing span
and a 1,000 HP BMW 323 radial. This aircraft was again
moderately successful but apparently underpowered, and
production plans were cancelled. The development program
was delayed and the type was finally cancelled in 1943.
