-------
This scenery depicts the airports and cities of Fitchburg, Gardner, and
Orange, Massachusetts, and is intended to be used with SubLogic's excellent
SD-12. The scenery is centered roughly at the Gardner VOR (a major
intersection of several airways in the Northeast), and has a 25 mile radius.
Some details of the 4 major cities (the ones mentioned above plus Leominster)
have been included. Mt. Wachusett (elevation 2090) has been included as a
major landmark in the area.
For a tour of the area, I suggest loading the MAAFITRB mode, placing you
on the ramp at Fitchburg Municipal airport. Takeoff using runway 14, and
follow Route 2 east to the Searstown Mall. Just beyond that, Route 190 forks
off from Rt. 2 and heads toward Worcester. Make a quick 180, and head west,
following Rt. 2 toward the Gardner VOR (look closely and you will see a
couple of commuters on Rt. 2). Heading back toward FIT, notice the new
Sheraton Hotel at the end of runway 20 (just to the right of the highway) -
great place to put a new 6 story building! On the left is the city of
Leominster with Rt. 13 and Rt. 12 merging just beyond Leominster Hospital.
On the right, there are some gravel pits at the end of runway 2 along side
the Nashua river. As you continue west along Rt. 2, you'll pass the Notown
Reservoir on the left and you'll see Mt. Wachusett and Rt. 140 in the
distance.
As you approach Gardner, the 3 large buildings in the center of the city
make up Simplex Time Recorder Co. (my employer). Just beyond that are
City Hall and the post office. The large lake on the right is Crystal lake,
the city's water supply. On the east side of Crystal Lake are the Henry
Heywood Hospital, WGAW AM's tower, and Mt. Wachusett Community College.
Just past the city on the left is the Gardner Municipal Airport. There
is a drive-in theater north of the airport and two ponds (Kendall pond -
the larger one north of Rt. 2, and Snake pond). There should also be some
road traffic here as well.
Continuing on toward Orange, notice that Rt. 2 turns into a smaller 2-lane
road. The Orange Airport is depicted (site of a fairly large EAA fly-in
every June), along with the industrial park (between runways 1 and 32).
Millers River meanders along north of the airport and the city (not much
here - I guess just like real life!)
