RUSSIAN NOTEPAD
FREE Windows program from Bill Tavolga.
Program requirements:
Windows 3.1 and TrueType font "XRussian" installed.
The file VBRUN200.DLL must be in your Windows directory.
This is a simple text program comparable to the standard Windows
NotePad. It requires that the accompanying font be installed.
For those not used to the procedure, the following steps
should be followed:
1. Copy the file XRUSS.TTF into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
2. Display your Windows Program Manager (or comparable)
3. Open the Windows group that contains the Control Panel
4. Open the Control Panel
5. Select and open the Fonts dialogue window
6. Click on 'Add'
7. Select the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
8. List of available fonts should appear
9. Move selection bar to find item: XRussian
10. Click on 'OK'
11. Font should now be accessible and listed
To install the Russian NotePad:
1. Select and open the Program Manager group you wish to use
2. Click on 'File', and menu will drop down
3. Select and click on 'New', and the click 'OK'
4. In Description box, enter: Russian Notepad
5. In Command Line box, enter: russpad.exe
6. In Working Directory box, enter the path to use, as:
d:\words or c:\windows\apps
7. Click 'OK'
The Russian Notepad icon should now appear in your group window.
Double-click the Russian flag to start the program.
The entry of text into the pad is simple. Press special key F9 to
switch to the Russian alphabet. Pressing F9 again returns to the
English.
The text does not word wrap, so you need to press 'Enter' to start
a new line. Output to printer also does not wrap, so watch your
line lengths. This is a 'no frills' text editor. But you can't
beat the price!
However, there is one special function available (aside from
switching fonts). To see the keyboard layout (usual Russian PC
arrangement), press special key F1. Press F1 again to remove the
display. Font size can be changed from 8 to 18 points (12 is the
default), but the change affects the entire document on screen
and as printed.
Keypad operates in standard fashion. File menu will clear, start
a new text, open an existing file, save current text, print text
on your default printer, or exit program. Edit menu will cut,
copy and paste selected text. Font size can also be accessed.
Click on Info for author's notes.
Saved files with Russian text are compatible only with this
program, since the font used is specially designed to include both
the English and Russian character sets.
The program was written in Visual Basic 2.0 (Microsoft), and
requires that the file VBRUN200.DLL be in the Windows directory.
This file is readily available in the Compuserve system and many
other sources.
The Russian Notepad was originally generated as a convenient and
simple tool for my personal use, and it represents an early effort
of mine in Visual Basic programming. Having found it handy myself,
I am making it available with no strings attached to anyone
interested. No guarantees, and probably no updates.
