  1. RUSSIAN NOTEPAD
  2.  
  3. FREE Windows program from Bill Tavolga.
  4.  
  5. Program requirements:
  6.    Windows 3.1 and TrueType font "XRussian" installed.
  7.    The file VBRUN200.DLL must be in your Windows directory.
  8.  
  9. This is a simple text program comparable to the standard Windows
  10. NotePad.  It requires that the accompanying font be installed.
  11. For those not used to the procedure, the following steps
  12. should be followed:
  13.      1. Copy the file XRUSS.TTF into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
  14.      2. Display your Windows Program Manager (or comparable)
  15.      3. Open the Windows group that contains the Control Panel
  16.      4. Open the Control Panel
  17.      5. Select and open the Fonts dialogue window
  18.      6. Click on 'Add'
  19.      7. Select the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory
  20.      8. List of available fonts should appear
  21.      9. Move selection bar to find item: XRussian
  22.      10. Click on 'OK'
  23.      11. Font should now be accessible and listed

  25. To install the Russian NotePad:
  26.      1. Select and open the Program Manager group you wish to use
  27.      2. Click on 'File', and menu will drop down
  28.      3. Select and click on 'New', and the click 'OK'
  29.      4. In Description box, enter: Russian Notepad
  30.      5. In Command Line box, enter: russpad.exe
  31.      6. In Working Directory box, enter the path to use, as:
  32.           d:\words        or         c:\windows\apps
  33.      7. Click 'OK'
  34. The Russian Notepad icon should now appear in your group window.
  35. Double-click the Russian flag to start the program.

  37. The entry of text into the pad is simple. Press special key F9 to
  38. switch to the Russian alphabet. Pressing F9 again returns to the
  39. English.

  41. The text does not word wrap, so you need to press 'Enter' to start
  42. a new line. Output to printer also does not wrap, so watch your
  43. line lengths. This is a 'no frills' text editor. But you can't
  44. beat the price!

  46. However, there is one special function available (aside from
  47. switching fonts). To see the keyboard layout (usual Russian PC
  48. arrangement), press special key F1. Press F1 again to remove the
  49. display. Font size can be changed from 8 to 18 points (12 is the
  50. default), but the change affects the entire document on screen
  51. and as printed.

  53. Keypad operates in standard fashion. File menu will clear, start
  54. a new text, open an existing file, save current text, print text
  55. on your default printer, or exit program. Edit menu will cut,
  56. copy and paste selected text. Font size can also be accessed.
  57. Click on Info for author's notes.

  59. Saved files with Russian text are compatible only with this
  60. program, since the font used is specially designed to include both
  61. the English and Russian character sets.

  63. The program was written in Visual Basic 2.0 (Microsoft), and
  64. requires that the file VBRUN200.DLL be in the Windows directory.
  65. This file is readily available in the Compuserve system and many
  66. other sources.

  68. The Russian Notepad was originally generated as a convenient and
  69. simple tool for my personal use, and it represents an early effort
  70. of mine in Visual Basic programming. Having found it handy myself,
  71. I am making it available with no strings attached to anyone
  72. interested. No guarantees, and probably no updates.

  78. The Volga-Writer is a Russian/English (DOS based) word processing
  79. program that can intermix Russian and English, and switch from one
  80. to the other with a single keystroke. The program is self-contained, and
  81. easy to use, while producing files compatible with other soft-ware.
  82. Ukrainian character set is included.
  83.  
  84. The program is compact and fast, with no resident portions, and
  85. needs less that 256K. Hardware requirements: IBM PC compatible
  86. computer; either EGA or VGA with color or good grey-scale
  87. display. (CGA and Hercules graphics not supported.) Draft
  88. printer driver supports most 9- and 24-pin Epson or IBM 
  89. compatible dot matrix printers. Letter quality font included
  90. for the Epson (or Epson compatible) 24-pin LQ series in 12
  91. pitch size. Proportional soft fonts for the Hewlett Packard
  92. LaserJet and DeskJet provided in 10, 12 and 14 point sizes.

  94. The user interface uses pull-down menus, and the Russian key-
  95. board layout is visible at a keystroke. The AATSEEL recommended
  96. style is the default, but the user can access or create other
  97. layouts. Most standard word processor functions are available:
  98. search, copy, move, and save blocks of lines; toggle word wrap.
  99. Files are saved in the commonly used "alternative" variant of
  100. ASCII format.

  102. Price for Volga-Writer 2.0 is US $35. Specify 5.25" or
  103. 3.5" disk.
  104. Version 1.13 of Volga-Writer supports CGA, and is still
  105. available. Price $35.
