  1. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE

  3. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  4. before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
  5. using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
  6. differ on details -- some request registration while others
  7. require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
  8. registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  9. using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  11. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
  12. and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  13. exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
  14. programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  15. of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  16. and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
  17. distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
  18. and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
  19. specific group. For example, some authors require written
  20. permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  21. Shareware.

  23. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
  24. should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  25. whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
  26. fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  27. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
  28. has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  29. product, you don't pay for it.

  34. "File Finder for Windows is supplied as is.  The author disclaims all
  35. warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the
  36. warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.  The
  37. author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which
  38. may result from the use of File Finder for Windows."

  41. at no charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with
  42. your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  43. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  44. provide personal computer users with quality software without
  45. high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to

  50. to use File Finder for Windows after a reasonable trial period,
  51. you must make a registration payment of $20 to Simian Id Software.
  52. The $20 registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  53. computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just like
  54. a book.  An example is that this software may be used by any
  55. number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
  56. location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  57. being used at one location while it's being used at another.
  58. Just as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the
  59. same time.

  61. Commercial users of File Finder for Windows must register and pay for
  62. their copies of File Finder for Windows within 30 days of first use
  63. or their license is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may be made
  64. by contacting Simian Id Software.

  66. Anyone distributing File Finder for Windows for any kind of remuneration
  67. must first contact Simian Id Software at the address below for
  68. authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted to
  69. distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
  70. shareware distributors, and such distributors may begin offering
  71. File Finder for Windows immediately (However, Simian Id Software must
  72. still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
  73. latest version of File Finder for Windows.).

  75. You are encouraged to pass a copy of File Finder for Windows along to
  76. your friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  77. copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  78. will receive a copy of the latest version of the File Finder for Windows
